Original caption reads:
"Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (RNVR) pilot Lieutenant C J Lavender of Enfield, stands beside his Fleet Air Arm Grumman F6F Hellcat fighter aircraft on the flight deck of the Royal Navy Illustrious-class aircraft carrier HMS Indomitable currently in action with the British Pacific Fleet off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia during World War II on 18th January 1945."

D.S.C. Lieutenant-Commander Royal Navy H.M.S. Blackcap. Edmonton, London Borough of Enfield, Greater London, England. Born 10. Nov. 1921 - KIS 10 Nov. 1955 - Sadly on his 34th Birthday.
When serving as a chief Flying Instructor he was killed in an accident in a Supermarine Attacker FB2 (WP281) while avoiding a collision with another aircraft.
As a lieutenant he was awarded the D.S.C. on 23 May 1952 "for distinguished service in operations in Korean waters."

German pre-dreadnought battleship "Schleswig-Holstein" attacks Polish positions in Westerplatte, from the harbor of Danzig, on the early morning of September 1st, 1939.

Force-landed Spitfire Mk IX, 308 Sqn (Polish), on January 1, 1945 flown by Tadeusz Szlenkier (on left). The aircraft was slightly damaged probably by the fire of Fw Hofmann flying a Focke-Wulf 190 A-8 of 3/JG 1, and run out of fuel.
Before force-landing Szlenkier himself shot down another FW190 belonging to 8 Staffel of that unit.

In fact this picture was taken after Westerplatte surrender (most likely 8 - 11 September 1939). Schleswig-Holstein is in Westerplatte Ammunition Pool and firing at polish defenders positions in Gdynia. Note main gun elevation angle - distance to Gdynia from that point is about 10 km.

In the military, D-Day is the day on which a combat attack or operation is to be initiated during World War II, on June 6, 1944 t in the Normandy landings initiating the Western Allied effort to liberate western Europe from Nazi Germany. However, many other invasions and operations had a designated D-Day, both before and after that operation.
