Intro TheMess.Net Landing Page

focusing more on the geopolitical side and much much less on the photos. And while that part of the site had huge traffic, it was also where most of the nastiness resided, as people often struggle to play nice online.
I understand mate and we have not been immune from outright abusive posts, like I am sure you did at themess we deal with that immediately and without remorse :)

Some of you seem familiar...

Started at mpnet when there was only a couple of hundred members, in early 2003.
Became a mod there not too long after and watched hood and his wife battle to keep the place alive, constantly dealing with legal claims and an increasingly puritanical advert supplier that had mrs hood comb every last post (and there was a few of them) that might cause offence.
Inevitably that wound up and we decided we weren't finished yet, but we didn't want to fall straight into hood's predicament. Hence TheMess focusing more on the geopolitical side and much much less on the photos. And while that part of the site had huge traffic, it was also where most of the nastiness resided, as people often struggle to play nice online. So time poor and not relishing all of the content that we were hosting, and advertising no longer paying the bills, we decided to wind up TheMess.
We knew facebook wasn't entirely the answer, at least 3 of the mods won't be joining us there, which is a great shame as they are 17 year old relationships that will not be the same. So we're glad that places like MI.net will attract elements of the community and keep it going.

Hello @digrar,

Given the 4+ Years of content on 'TheMess' would it be possible to somehow get an extract or the like of the content there for archive sake? Has there been much or any talk between the mod team on it and those technically savvy?
These communities have been great, but with each iteration I feel we lose something of prior exchanges, shared wisdom and the like...

Not that I know the logistics of all involved, just wondering if some of us could even retrieve it (and indeed how big such would be)
Indeed it was a shame itself when mp.net closed losing all the interviews, personal insights and sources that were shared...

As for the 3 mods that won't be joining FB, have they said anything about joining say this forum, where like you they may be free from the worse head aches of being mods?

Cheers

Got a few suggestions which I'll offer for consideration . In the bunker you have a non military / off topic thread . Would it be possible to keep that off topic and create a new section for politics / news and current events ? For example at the mess there was a thread " show us the guns " where gun hobbyists would post there new weapons they ve bought and discuss pros / cons etc . Ideal for off topic . I noticed as well you have a " show us your new purchases " type thread in there , again perfect for off topic . Another thread " new Zealand shootings " though would be ideal for the politics / news section to let people debate . Hope that makes sense .
Got to say mi is a stunning website by the way . A real Aladdin's cave of history . Well done to all who have contributed .

Good suggestions mate, we also have a thread prefix for politics too so will fit in nicely :)
Thanks for your positive comments too really appreciated (Y)

Just a quick question regarding new topics.
The one thing I enjoyed the most about the mess were the country specific Armed Forces threads, where members posted news about equipment purchases or changes in the countrys structure and order of battle.

This site on the other side seems to summarize those topics under broader regional rather aspects (Ozeania, Western Europe, Eastern Europe etc)
than national.

Are country specific, non-photo, threads allowed or do you guys want to concentrate on the regional part?

IIRC back in MP.net these news info's went alongside pictures in the country specific picture threads.

Yes most things are allowed mate, we have created some forums as a general guide but you can post pretty much whatever you like.
Hope that clears things up. :)

Edit
Dont forget too that we are open to suggestions, this is your site and we think all members should have a say in things. That doesnt mean we will take all suggestions on but we can put ideas to a vote if necessary. No dictators here buddy mil-smile08

It's not something we've talked about, and with the lack of images, didn't think there would be that much interest to be honest and personally I think we'll be happy to walk away.
I've got no idea on the IT side of saving anything, but if someone was to make the request over there, we'd talk about it.
I know there was at least one person at MPnet who went through and grabbed what they could in the time available. I don't recall their name, or what their particular interest was, but I do recall they grabbed a heap of posts.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I started most of the regional military and political news threads as there wasn't a lot being posted on this site as it is/was very image heavy, with the idea of keeping the specific country image threads from being bogged down with "stuff" other than photo's. I completely get where you are coming from with having news about equipment buys etc in specific country threads.

As @Bombardier has already stated, this is your site also and you are welcome to start new threads in the appropriate areas or to suggest new areas be opened up.

The traffic and input of our newest members from TheMess has already been wonderful! :)

I'm a orphan from MP.net/Mess thanks for taking in this roaster

my name is Bradford (Brad for short), i've never served in the military (due to my political leanings) i am a enthusiast and Model kit builder mainly 1/72 armour/armor kits ... i like building computers as well -sat;, I am a football fan my team is Kilmarnock a Scottish premier league club Scotland's oldest "professional" football club, i like Rugby and F1 as well, i liked to cycle as well.

i was for years into military history from 1919 to 1947 period .... it now sorta bores me and now i tend more to focus on post war subjects mainly Soviet/Russian and the same goes for building model kits ... how many more Tigers and King Tigers are these model companies going to release

I hope to be more active and pragmatic than i was on the Mess
