Because people need references in order to make decisions.

Famous person A does X, therefore X must be good and I should follow the lead.
Because famous persons are known to be well educated and informed, they know things everyday people don't.

Not following the example they are setting is not only synonymous with questioning their judgment, but also pretentiously implying you know better than them. You, an anonymous everyday person. That is preposterous.
