RIP, US Steel.

Funny thing is, US Steel is just a name. They're much smaller than Cleveland Cliffs and Nicor, which are other America steel companies. As is, US Steel can't compete and their factories are decades out of date. Once US Steel closes down, entire towns are going to die. Each US Steel worker supports 7 people in their towns, in the form of family and local businesses.

It's why US Steel union workers are for the deal. Nippon Steel has promised much needed upgrades, that they won't fire the workers, and a chance to revive the flagging towns where they're at.

When I mustered out, I was strongly advised to hang around for about 2 weeks so my health, hearing and mental status could be accurately evaluated. But after 2 tours in beautiful SE Asia, all I wanted was to be HOME! So I signed out, which meant I couldn't get much money for hearing loss - like none in my case. Heck, when we qualified for M-16s, we had no hearing protection - at the time, pretty much only artillery folks did, and even then it was just the little foam plugs.

I asked about it several years ago and got, "You ran locomotives for how many years?" To address the matter, a thorough hearing eval should be mandatory before you leave the military.
