Politics Tariffs/Trade Wars

On average the EU tariff is at 5 % to US. The thought that now theres alot of Americans with the idea that the tariff is 39 % is quite funny

These tariffs will for sure bring some investments to the US, and trump apparently said that he doesn't believe in the global supply chain "just make it in the US". Average factory takes 3-4 years to get up and running. So go figure.

Trump supporters say this will replace or lower income tax and the same time bring jobs. But if trump lowers or removes tariffs for a deal then that's also really good and winning.

It's all quite funny.

And you need all the people to run it too.

Going to hop out the magic hat or something.

While at the same time cutting funding for education...

Penguins need to stop looting America.

Nowhere on Earth is safe’: Trump imposes tariffs on uninhabited islands near Antarctica

Australian prime minister surprised after external territories – including tiny Norfolk Island and remote islands home to penguins – targeted by US president

A group of barren, uninhabited volcanic islands near Antarctica, covered in glaciers and home to penguins, have been swept up in Donald Trump’s trade war, as the US president hit them with a 10% tariff on goods.

Heard Island and McDonald Islands, which form an external territory of Australia, are among the remotest places on Earth, accessible only via a two-week boat voyage from Perth on Australia’s west coast. They are completely uninhabited, with the last visit from people believed to be nearly 10 years ago.

Nevertheless, Heard and McDonald islands featured in a list released by the White House of “countries” that would have new trade tariffs imposed.

The Australian prime minister, Anthony Albanese, said on Thursday: “Nowhere on Earth is safe.”

I'm so stupid that i dont get how the likes of vietnam or cambodia would be able to reduce that trade deficit, they can only buy so much american goods.
or like those poor french on Saint Pierre and Miquelon, an island off the coast of canada got 50 % tariff, lol.

So, it was even more stupid than I thought it was.

"When goods and services are taken into account, the EU has a small surplus with the US of €48 billion; this is the equivalent of just 3% of total EU-US trade (€1.6 trillion)."

So, cherry picking and idiocracy maths...

And immigration.

Because you know who doesn't like drowning themselves in debt to go to college to get a good education so they can work two minimum wage full-time jobs in a factory out of sheer patriotism. T'is the American dream I tell ya 😏

One of a college mate of mine is now working in one of the largest construction companies the US, they work in infrastructure and they recruited him and asked if he can recommend more as, Civil Engineers are a dying breed over there.

So yeah.

France's Macron calls for suspension of European investment in US after "brutal and unfounded" tariffs

PARIS, April 3 (Reuters) - French President Emmanuel Macron called on Thursday for European companies to suspend planned investment in the United States after U.S. President Donald Trump announced sweeping global tariffs on American imports.

"I think what's important, and that's all the work that must be done by sector, that the investments to come or investments announced in recent weeks should be suspended until things are clarified with the United States," Macron said during a meeting with French industry representatives.

Macron said no response had been ruled out yet and suggested using the anti-coercion mechanism, responses targeting digital services and looking at financing mechanisms of the U.S. economy.

Macron added that the response to the reciprocal tariffs would be "more massive" than its earlier retaliation to U.S. steel and aluminum tariffs.
Macron called the tariffs "brutal and unfounded" and a shock for international trade, and that Europe must respond "industry by industry".

Newly minted US engineers can look forward to having their compensation package offers under pressure from hiring companies preferring foreign engineers. A friend of mine, seasoned chemical engineer with a Phd, got significant flak as time went along from his managers because he insisted on taking his vacations, while foreign engineers left theirs on the table. So there's that disincentive for recruiting new engineers and some other occupations these days.

I guess that really depends on the firm. My engineering friends there enjoy their vacations and one actually works from home, somehow they never got the same issue as your friend. Having said that, most companies are assholes and will work you hard if they can get away with it.

My company for example talks a massive talk about "work life" but when I took my vacation last year piece meal, most of my application got denied. So this year I took my entire vacation in one go... was supposed to go to Canada, but didnt pan out. Im just ranting now its my second day of not working and Im already jonesing from not being in the cockpit. Tried fishing today and almost threw my fishing rod at the lake... Nothing to do with the thread, its just going to get worse from now on till the end of this month.

The question is what is the real goal here.

Because the effects of huge investments in the states to avoid tariffs is plausible but works better on paper than in real life because the process is enormous and very costly. Lip service is free, it gets complicated after.

Let´s say you move your factory from somewhere in Europe to the USA to avoid the tariff (that could be wiped out anytime by an executive decision so that is quite a gamble)...do you produce yourself all the components you need? Probably not...Noone does everything: the end product is the higher added value part of the manufacturing process but you probably needed components from other sources, because you do not have the know how or the economic conditions to make it the way you want.

So you need your entire supply chain to be free of tariffs to benefit from being tariff free. Which means that eventually you will need to find a local US provider to do the components for you. This American producer probably also needs to source where it is cheap and eventually also tariff free.

Of course this component needs to be adapted by design and engineering to your product, or your product to the quality of what you find locally. This is a daunting task: it requires trainings, sharing of information, testing, quality control....

And eventually because the idea is only great if you get local sourcing, local sourcing will be in high demand, maybe not capable of meeting your requirements...and perhaps also expensive because demand drives prices up.

Lip service may be cheap but this is a high gamble, not somethig easy to win, and not automatically a good idea for the USA. German industry kept in Germany the higher added value manufacturing, outsourced to the Czech Republic or Slovakia the manufacturing of components who themselves relied on the production of half raw materials from people working with raw materials.

We work here with foundries. Is this where you guys want your kid to work? Granted it will all be run by robots one day but still..

If Trump wants the US/Irish based companies back serious subsidies will be the next Maga project. But it requires taxes and govt spending something they cannot abide by.
Subsidies and jobs or no subsidies and no jobs that is the question.

In the end:
- You will be paying higher for a cheaper quality product in the US
- America just gave up its economic dominance in Asia
- The billionaires will be buying stocks when its down, while peoples saving are in the gutters

Somehow Americans feel they are more connected with the Billionaires who treat them as cogs in a machine over their fellow men. Harping on the "3 trillion investment" that wouldn't happen till about a few years from now and would probably have no effect on them. But the eggs they are eating would be gold.

Clearly Musk's Tesla robots actually represent a bigger future threat to voter employment than the migrants. One in every home? He has invested in it to not fail. You look at it... he helps Trump get elected to shift out the migrants so his robots can take over. Same with the solar panels they can't make it in the market without subsidies so Biden does everything possible to send the cost of gas up and ban coal. Elons robots can't make it in the market with the underpaid migrants.
So in the same vein Elon the benevolent especially does not need these migrants.
Robot MMA will be something wont it.

Business group Economiesuisse said there were no plausible grounds for the U.S. tariffs, noting that Switzerland had abolished industrial tariffs from the start of 2024 and already had lower import tariffs than the United States.
Trump wants to reduce the U.S. trade deficit, and Switzerland runs a substantial surplus in goods trade.
Still, Economiesuisse said that if services are included, trade between the two countries is almost balanced.
