A drone friend of mine writes about the Russians attacking in the open field. Professional guy, writes clearly, helps clear up some common misconceptions. The picture is an illustration.
"Everyone has seen the footage of those epic "herd across the field" attacks in the Kursk region.
Everyone laughed, and the memes have been spread...
But not everything is as simple and as stupid as we think...
(*No, definitely stupid, but there are nuances.)
Let's look at these attacks from the perspective of a bomber pilot:
Obviously, I've never seen so many stormtroopers (as in the Kursk videos) heading across an open field towards our positions, but the Russians started using something similar in their attacks this summer. At first glance, it all seems very simple for a bomber drone: you can hit it if you want to, it's a smooth target in the middle of a field. But there's a nuance.
When the drone approaches, they scatter sideways and start shooting at the drone from all sides. There's a pretty good chance you're going to hit the drone and get shot down, because you have to go lower to hit it.
They stand there stupidly, looking at the drone, waiting for us to hit the release button, and then randomly start running away and throw themselves on the ground in the field. They are hard to hit. You have to get down, but the moment you aim at one of them, his brothers are firing all their guns at you.
So it's very difficult to hit them from 40+ altitude, because they see the fall and have more than enough time to run and hide. If you go lower, you're much more likely to get shot.
How many bomber drones are in this area? One or two, three at the most. There's a whole horde coming across the field. We arrive, we drop them, hit or miss them, and we have to fly in to reload them. It's always like that. How big is the field? One kilometer. By the time I get there the first time, I release and return to re-equip, I may not have time to catch them in the field for the second jump, they may have already jumped to cover.
For FPV it's almost the same theme with some nuance.
Where are the infantry with machine guns, where are the mortars and artillery? This is not a question for me.
So you can laugh at them, call them stupid, etc, but its at home on the couch until this horde directly attacks you or your men. Then it's not f***ing funny.
And the most important thing is that we've found a way to solve the effectiveness of drone strikes during these "attacks through the field". But obviously I'm not going to write about that here."
