The Sea of Azov is quite some distance from the front lines of the conflict. Count me as skeptical that this is correct unless Ukraine has secretly received both F-16's and AMRAAM-D or METEOR.

Some reports that Russians use same flight paths, each day.

My first thought was hello F16’s. But also Ukraine has moved patriots forward, under cover of the lower tier systems, then turned them on, just at the right time.

Lots of reports, could just be a crash of course.

Weather seems to be gentle so I doubt it is related to that. A collision seems unlikely unless the crew of a plane with a huge radar dome stuck on it is as incompetent as the ground radar crews are.

Theoretically all it takes is putting part of an old Kub or Osa launcher on a non-descript ship. The waters around Crimea aren't exactly water tight as raids have shown and I'd expect both the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea coast to be even worse. Both aircraft have zero countermeasures.

My guess? Captain Pricekiy snuck ashore, commandeered an S-400 battery and let rip! 😏

Narco sub with asraam.

"Friendly Fire". Very plausible.
With all those friendly fire accidents and all those catastrophic equipment losses due to someone smoking at the wrong place and what have you, you'd assume the Russian government would try and do something about the carelessness of its military!

The closest analog I can think of is SADF Recces inserting well behind the lines and using MANPADS to shoot down a 4 engine AN-12 full of Soviets(mostly from Crimea) In Angola.

CTR of Russian air base activity would certainly be a Ukrainian SOF mission(not sure about priority) along the lines of UKSOF and other assets monitoring Argentine Air Force activity.

There are 4-6 A50s showing on satellite photos(of unknown age) at Taganrog Airport(directly adjacent to the seafront) in the northeast corner of the Sea of Azov.

A50’s are a pretty substantial and irreplaceable platform.

Killing one of the few updated platforms would be a high priority.

I’ll bet a beer it might be a MANPAD shot to the face on climb out when it’s full of fuel with a seekerhead and fuze optomised to send hot splinter’s into full fuel tanks.

A drone or drones could possibly be used to hit a big bird on rotation.

Hard, but not impossible.

Plenty of places for CTR and MANPAD teams to hide in the wetlands to the East if they could successfully infil.

And exfil, if it’s not run remotely.

Supposedly the Russians had 10 (9 now if correct) A-50U model AWACS in service, these being the upgraded version that copes with modern warfare. So the loss of one would be a significant hurt. There are however an additional 70-90 of the older versions still kicking around, but they don't seem to be put anywhere near the Ukraine front (most likely because they'd be pretty useless in the face of the vast amounts of EW/ECM being thrown about by both sides).

There are/were also 2 of the A50-100 model which used western electronics in existence. Further versions were cancelled post 2014 when the supply of electronics dried up.
