Israel:
25 August 2019
Israeli fighter jets carried out airstrikes in Syria to thwart a planned attack on Israel by Iran-backed fighters using armed drones, the Israel Defense Forces said Saturday night.
The Israeli military said its strike late Saturday targeted operatives from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Quds Force as well as Shiite militias who had been planning on sending “kamikaze” attack drones into Israel armed with explosives.
“The IDF, by Israeli aircraft, was able to thwart an Iranian attempt led by the Quds force from Syria to conduct an attack on Israeli targets in northern Israel using killer drones,” military spokesman Jonathan Conricus told reporters.
Following the strikes, several Military Intelligence units, air force squadrons and air defense units were put on high alert. Additional air defenses batteries were deployed to northern Israel as a precautionary measure.
Mayors in northern Israel were also warned of the potential for retaliatory strikes by Iranian forces.
Conricus said Israel had monitored the plot for several months and on Thursday prevented Iran from making an “advanced attempt” to execute the same plan. Then, Iran tried again late Saturday to carry out the same attack, he said.
According to Conricus, the Israeli attack targeted “a number of terror targets and military facilities belonging to the Quds force as well as Shiite militias.”
“This was a significant plan with significant capabilities that had been planned for a few months,” Conricus said. “It was not something done on a low level, but rather top down from the Quds Force.”
He said the Iranian attack was believed to be “very imminent.”
Conricus also noted that while Iranian forces had launched rockets and missiles at Israel from Syria three times during 2018, the use of “kamikaze” drones set to explode on their targets was a new and “different tactic.”
“The threat was significant and these killer drones were capable of striking targets with significant capacity,” he said.
The rare Israeli announcement of a strike inside Syria came minutes after Syrian state television reported air defenses were activated against hostile targets.
The SANA state news agency claimed that “most of the hostile Israeli missiles were destroyed before reaching their targets.”
“The attack was dealt with immediately and efficiently,” SANA said.
The Britain-based Syria Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said several missiles hit positions maintained by foreign forces, while others were downed by air defenses.
The IDF said the strikes targeted sites in the town of Aqrabah, southeast of Damascus, near the city’s airport.

Qatar:
The US Air Force awarded Boeing a $500 million contract in support of Qatar’s F-15QA.
The deal is for Qatar Emiri Air Force (QAEF) aircrew and maintenance training. In 2017, Qatar placed a $12 billion order for 36 of Boeing’s advanced F-15QA heavy strike fighters.
These aircraft were designed as advanced derivatives of the F-15E Strike Eagle deployed by the US Air Force, which itself was derived from the F-15C air superiority fighter with a new emphasis on long range and air to ground capabilities.
Boeing will perform work under the new contract in St. Louis, Missouri and will move work to Qatar in 2021. Estimated completion is in August 2026.

Israel:
Heightened tensions along Israel’s northern frontier with Lebanon escalated into an exchange of cross-border hostilities over the weekend, causing extensive damage in both countries.
Iran’s Lebanese-proxy Hezbollah followed through on its vow to launch a retaliatory attack against an Israeli military installation yesterday, which in part involved the firing of several anti-tank missiles by armed militants that struck the Avivim IDF border outpost. Several military vehicles were hit, incurring extensive material damage.
An Israeli Air Force helicopter gunship immediately responded by opening fire in the direction of the attacking Hezbollah operatives, while several IDF artillery batteries deployed along the frontier fired an estimated 100 shells into Lebanon’s Maroun A-Ras region, most of which were reportedly smoke shells.
Initial reports by the Hezbollah-affiliated Al-Manar Network claimed a number of IDF soldiers were killed and wounded, when a military vehicle described as an “armored ambulance” sustained a direct hit from an anti-tank missile. The Israeli military had apparently staged a diversionary ploy, however, involving a simultated evacuation of supposedly “injured troops” by helicopter to Rambam Medical Center in the northern city of Haifa, while keeping it classified that no Israeli casualties had in fact been suffered.
The IDF only officially announced that there had been neither Israel casualties after Hezbollah proclaimed its attack had successfully wounded four Israeli soldiers. About an hour later after consultations with IDF Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi and other IDF generals, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed the Jewish State had “responded with 100 shells and firing from the air by various means” after coming under attack by “several anti-tank missiles.” He added, “We are consulting about the next steps,” saying “I have ordered that we be prepared for any scenario.” After saying that “the next steps” will be determined “pending developments,” the Israeli Premier confirmed, ” this time I have an important announcement: We have no casualties – not even a scratch.”

Syria:
Iran
has established a new military base in Syria and has plans to house thousands of troops at the location, according to multiple Western intelligence sources.
The classified Iranian project, called the Imam Ali compound, was approved by top leadership in Tehran and is being completed by the Iranian al-Quds Forces.
Using a civilian satellite company, Fox News verified the information and obtained images that show a base being constructed on the Syria-Iraq border.
Analysts at Image Sat International (ISI) who reviewed the images say that precision-guided missiles could be housed at five different newly constructed buildings that are surrounded by large dirt mounds. The images also show, in the northwest part of the base, 10 additional storehouses with less external protection, as well as new buildings and missile storage structures.
ISI analysts say that construction could be completed over the next few months and the base would be operational shortly after.

Iran says it's ready for war with US after Saudi oil attack accusations

https://news.sky.com/story/iran-say...s-after-saudi-oil-attack-accusations-11810252

When in doubt, pour a little oil on the issue - is it really a good idea to goad the only superpower?
Elections approach for US president - a nice 'clean' set of airstrikes and IMHO Iran would be without electrical power, lose its 'fleet' of speedboats in the gulf and all its aircraft, and any of its 'peaceful' nuclear research facilities- in about 3 days of work.
= trump re-elected.

Saudi says Iranian sponsorship of attack undeniable, displays arms

RIYADH/DUBAI (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia on Wednesday displayed remnants of what it described as Iranian drones and cruise missiles used in an attack on Saudi oil facilities, saying they were “undeniable” evidence of Iranian aggression.

A total of 25 drones and missiles were launched at two oil plants in last weekend’s strikes, including Iranian Delta Wing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) and “Ya Ali” cruise missiles, Defense Ministry spokesman Colonel Turki al-Malki said.

“The attack was launched from the north and unquestionably sponsored by Iran,” he told a news conference. “The evidence ... that you have seen in front of you, makes this undeniable.”

Authorities were still working to determine the exact launch point, Malki said, repeatedly declining to answer reporters questions about whether Iran actually carried out the attack.

"Israel is currently building the infrastructure needed to accommodate F-35s, including hardened aircraft shelters, underground pens, and maintenance facilities. In addition, the IAF has ordered 30 M-346 trainer jets to train F-35 pilots. Construction of a manufacturing facility to produce wings under license for the F-35 was completed mid-2014. The site is to produce a total of 811 wing pairs. Initial orders for the F-35 were for 20 jets, with a total of 75 intended"

Saudi Arabia:
Oil prices fell after a report that Saudi Arabia has moved to impose a partial ceasefire in Yemen, bringing hope of easing tensions in the Middle East.

Saudi Arabia has agreed to a ceasefire in four areas in Yemen, including San'a, Dow Jones reported, citing unidentified people familiar with the plans. Crude had already been heading for a weekly decline as Opec's largest producer is about a week ahead of its repair schedule following attacks last week and is pumping more than 8 million barrels a day, according to people familiar with the matter.

While the return of production in Saudi Arabia has weighed on prices this week, the decline also reflects a deepening manufacturing slump in Germany, more signs of economic weakness in China and rising crude stockpiles in the US. The potential ceasefire in Yemen will likely help to cool growing political tensions in the region, after the attacks on Saudi oil infrastructure on Sept 14 knocked out 5 per cent of global production and resulted in the US planning to move more troops to the region.

If a ceasefire is agreed, "then we should return to US$60 (S$82) as we are back to focusing only on growth and demand worries", said Ole Hansen, head of commodities strategy at Saxo Bank.

The US, Saudi Arabia and major European powers have all blamed Iran for the attacks, though Teheran has denied the allegations. Houthi rebels, which the Saudis are battling in Yemen, have claimed responsibility for the assault.

I don't speak any French, so how could it be in French?
Something like régiment de khat à mâcher d'infanterie étrangère? Anyway, I'd deploy it in Chad.
