I watched that video again, I'm not really sure I understand what I'm watching? Looks like about a dozen or so well armed, armored vehicles running away from lightly armed infantry. It's like they aren't even fighting back or defending themselves, just driving themselves off the road. Any back story here?

The informational value of videos like this is virtually zero. At best they can be an illustration to news from a reliable source... which is not really the case.

Houthi rebels video fails to prove Saudi troop capture claim
Houthi rebels in Yemen have released footage which they say shows a major attack on Saudi forces near the border between the two countries.
On Saturday, a Houthi spokesman said three Saudi brigades had surrendered near the Saudi town of Najran.
Saudi officials have not commented on the alleged assault.
The video shows an attack on armoured vehicles, but there is so far no verification of the Houthi claim of a major military success.
Colonel Yahiya Sarea alleged on Saturday that Saudi forces had suffered "huge losses in life and machinery", including "thousands" of its troops.
All those captured would be paraded on the Houthi-run Al Masirah TV network, he said.
But the video broadcast on Sunday instead shows what appear to be rebels firing at vehicles on a road.
This is followed by footage of several burnt-out vehicles, as well as assorted light weaponry laid out on the ground and a group of men not in military uniforms marching down a dirt road.

This vid is just a a demostration of how this whole war has been going for the Saudis for the last 4 years. But if fails to proof the latest claims of the Houthis about +500 KIA +2000POWs.

The only thing this vid proves is the absolute lack of competence of Saudi military.
This kind of ambushes and crazy cavalcades of the Saudi Armor and IFVs, running for their lives like headless chickens over kilometers of road, just to get ambushed & destroyed at pre-selected bottlenecks, has been going on since day1.
When Saudis find themselves in this situation, they have time and again decided to drive their vehicles offroad down to gorges/cliffs, destroying them in the process, or through impassable terrain where they get bogged down and neutralized. Not a single time have I seen them dismounting and engaging enemy forces before gettin trapped in the death zone selected by their enemy.
Despite of enjoying absolute uncontested air superiority, Saudi Aircrafts and Helos are nowhere to be seen while this massacres take place. So it is not difficult to assume that there is absolute no coordination between the different branches of Saudi military or that coordination between services is piss-poor at best.
Saudis have been paying in blood during combat what they didnt pay in sweat during training. I hardly see any combat performance improvement and this is already their 4th year of war in Yemen.

Thats why everytime I hear Saudi leadership chest beating and threatening Iran, I cant help but to laugh. Being Iranians an Average military forcé, below western standards relating to capabilities and combat performance, but still able to hold their ground for some time against a determined assault. If Saudis went head on against them, on their own, they would be clubbed to death like baby seals by the Iranians (who know a thing or two about ambushes and deception as proved during the Gulf War).

Just a quick note, vid seems to come directly from Yemen military, not Houthi, and that is a big difference in itself.

Came across some other vids on Twatter, showing some combat footage related to this ambush. Yemeni military personnel in uniform could be seen conducting those attacks together with the flip-flop wearing dudes. At those vids, I was able to count up to 12 different APCs IFVs knocked down.
Still far from the 3 brigades that Yemenis are claiming, but in the lastest hours seems that info is starting to flow.

And just by coincidence, General A. Al-Faghem who was the head of the bodyguard service of last 2 Saudi Kings got killed in a "personal dispute"
Take that denomination with a truckload of salt, as in KSA absolutely normal to die during your "Passport Renovation/reissue", so a "personal dispute" could mean whatever from aliens from área 51 showing up at Ryhad and refusing to pay a traffic ticket for parking their spaceship at a bus stop, to an assesination attempt at palace.

Also unrelated, huge fire at Jeddah High speed train station. Dunno if it was due a "personal dispute", "terrorism" or "workplace rage". You never know if anything is unrelated in KSA.

Yeah, I always assume claims like that are exaggerated. I did see another video with far more vehicles stopped on a road and looking like they were captured.

Lots more here. Whatever happened, the Saudis lost a lot of vehicles and gear. Also looks like a lot of mercenaries, (possibly Yemeni), were captured as well as Saudis. Amazing with all of those LAVs and VADs they couldn't put up a fight.

Seems that Saudi Askaris were beaten down, and that the only Saudis there were the drivers for the armored vehicles. Most of the Askaris seem to be south Yemeni on Saudi paycheck. They captured a sh!tload of Toyotas, Rifles, LMGs & RPGs ((nothing that they do actually lack at Yemen)). Saudis will just pour more stuff out of their stockpiles and contract new Askaris. Rinse and repeat, this war could last another 10 years at this pace.

A bit of training and motivation for both the Saudis and the mercenaries would go a long way. They definitely had enough firepower with them to put the hurt on the other side, yet they folded completely.

The “prince” is phucked. A good article:

I didn’t know he wanted to bribe the Turks.

From the various reports that emerged last days, it seems that it was a brigade level combination of yemeni regular armed forces and houthis that launched a pincer operation (one flank inside KSA territory ) coordinated with SRBMs launches on major KSA helos and CAS aircrafts airstrips to paralyze them. That's why the retaliation (according to the POW) was very poor and no plane nor helos were seen.
And if it is proven true that means that Yemen/Houthis force have performed a brigade level combined arm operation. Not too shaby for a supposed flip flop army.

You'd think that if the Saudi air force had it's stuff together, they would have identified and destroyed those missile launchers before the fact, instead of allowing them to suppress operations.

As an Asian that has 5 pais of flip flops, between an army walking around in the heat with all their battle gear and steroids for instagram poses, I would place money on flipflops guy with a rifle.

What a waste of fine military hardware, Saudi Arabia can buy the most sophisticated military equipment there is but they can't but human skill and intelligence...or perhaps they can? Hello Erik Prince :p

I wonder what it would cost to hire someone like Prince and raise a professional mercenary army of say, 5,000? It has to be cheaper than this fiasco and they'd actually have an effective force.

Hunting TELARs or launch sites or heavy MLRS is not so easy as we learned during GW1, GW2, Lybia, Kosovo.
We all have to stop supposing that the opfor are idiots. Obviously not the case concerning yemeni forces.
They are hammering KSA with DIY SRBM for years now even with heavy saous air superiority and US backing Intel.
KSA seems only good to bomb weddings and schools. That's what happens when your officers and NCOs are selected by political - tribal loyalty, not merit.

I guess the question is are the Yemenis good or are the Saudis just terrible?
