Very interesting photo.

Especially from the perspective that it was the last one, very soon to be all over rover.

I wonder what was going on in the heads of those in the reviewing stand?

Who thought DDR would last another 40 years?

Who thought DDR wouldn’t last another 40 days?

This is one of those photos where weeks evolved like decades.

How ironic that the DDR was the last heir of the prussian military traditions (not counting with Chile)

As a German with a Family thats has some GDR history I thought it could be adequate for me to answer this as good as I can.
Bottom line: Nobody saw it coming. My Grandpa fled the GDR in 1962. My GreatGrandmother und GreatGrandather were allowed to leave the GDR in 76 because the GDR did not want to care for old people and was pretty okay with allowing them to leave because the BRD was gonna have to pay for them... Even though Gorbatschow was pretty progressive A LOT of people on both sides of the border thought he was gonna be overthrown basically just turn sick and not reappear if you know what i mean. Everybody was quite suprised when the General Secretary Schabowsky said the everybody was allowed to travel west.
