I'm sure there is an awareness in Gaza that if Hamas returns to power they will be more ruthless than ever. Not only towards the Israelis, but also towards the Palestinians.
If you didn't show absolute loyalty you can expect retribution. I would expect a complete militarization of the territory and population.

Earlier on this thread I made a post about how legacy media didn't really become worse or more partizan, as the conventional wisdom goes. Rather we've started getting a much better idea of how awful those people are, because now we have social media (Twitter, specifically) to check them. Imagine, S**t like that going on twenty years ago, you'd never ever know it was a lie - instead, you'd have a firm impression, that the actual Israeli defense minister openly proclaimed an actual genocide plan. Just imagine.

One must separate the war itself, and "the day after". Whatever you mean by "eradication of Hamas", it's important to remember, that you didn't have to kill every single Nazi during WWII in order to defeat Nazism and "eradicate" it as a viable political movement (in fact many former Nazis had high-ranking positions in the West Germany after the war). The ultimate goals of the war ("dismantling Hamas military and government capabilities") is to create conditions for whatever new order is going to take place in Gaza - instead of Hamas.

The way Israel sees it, whatever the political order will emerge, Israel will retain the freedom of military operation inside Gaza (same as in the West Bank), whilst the actual governance will be executed in the beginning by some sort of new international body. The "chatter" you are hearing is most probably about the latter part. There are a lot of arguments about the final political order - ranging from some sort of modified Palestinian Authority/State (prefered US/Western position) to a Palestinian version of Emirates. We'll see.
