"The Hardest Day" Sunday 18, August 1940
RAF aircraftmen guard the remains of Dornier Do17Z-2 (F1+HT) 9 Staffel/Kampfgeschwader 76, shot down during a low-level attack on Kenley aerodrome, 18 August 1940. The aircraft crashed in Golf Road, Kenley at 1.20pm.
This aircraft was hit by A.A. defences during a low level attack on Kenley aerodrome, and crashed in flames on a bungalow known as "Sunnycroft" on the perimeter of the airfield. All five crew members perished in the aircraft.

'The Hardest Day' is a name given to a Second World War air battle fought on 18 August 1940 during the Battle of Britain between the German Luftwaffe and British Royal Air Force (RAF). On this day, the Luftwaffe made an all-out effort to destroy RAF Fighter Command.
