The stealth frigate "Mogami" was built taking into account the reduction in the number personnel required for service, as the Japanese fleet is experiencing a shortage of personnel. "Mogami" will be a new type of escort ship MSS Japan - it can be used to combat submarines, opponents in sea and air in case of an emergency.
In addition, it also performs some of the functions of minesweepers in the Japanese fleet.
The Mogami's crew is about 90 people, which is half that of the usual general-purpose escort ship of the Japanese fleet, which also speaks of high level of automation on board.
In total, Japan's naval self-defense forces expect to receive 22 such ships.

Austin's discussions are likely to include talks on increased Chinese presence around the disputed Senkaku islands, which Japan administers but Beijing claims US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin (2nd R) gets off a plane upon his arrival at the US Yokota Air Base in Tokyo

They will both continue on to South Korea, before Defense Secretary Austin heads separately to India and Secretary of State Blinken holds talks back in the United States with Chinese officials.

Taiwan:
A Taiwanese air force pilot has been killed and another is missing after their fighter jets disappeared in a suspected midair collision off the island’s southern coast, officials said.

The crash on Monday was the third such incident in the past half-year, at a time when the island’s armed forces are having to intercept Chinese aircraft on an almost daily basis.

The two F-5E jets disappeared from radar at about 3pm (07:00 GMT) some 2.6km (1.6 miles) off the coast of rural southern Pingtung County, the National Rescue Command Centre said.

It added that the fighters, each with one pilot on board, crashed into the sea off the island’s southeastern coast after they apparently collided in midair during a training mission.

One of the pilots was found unconscious in the sea but could not be resuscitated and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Rescuers were still searching for the remaining pilot.

South Korea decided Wednesday to buy dozens more advanced attack helicopters from abroad by 2028, the arms procurement agency said.

The defense project promotion committee, presided over by Defense Minister Suh Wook, approved a plan to import around 36 large combat choppers with a budget of 3.17 trillion won ($2.81 billion), according to the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA).

South Korea secured and deployed 36 Boeing AH-64E Apache helicopters under the first round of the project between 2012 and 2021.

“We will begin procedures to select the exact type of this asset and a company to purchase attack choppers. The budget has increased due to inflation and the necessary addition of some equipment and facilities,” a DAPA official said.

“This second batch project is to enhance our ground forces’ operations of offensive manoeuvres,” he added.

During the meeting, the government also decided to develop a minesweeping helicopter with domestic technologies.

A total of 850 billion won will be poured into the project which is to be launched next year to continue through 2030, and the envisioned model is expected to be based on the country’s Marineon, the Marine variant of KUH-1 Surion helicopter, according to officials.

It also decided to continue the ongoing project of building next-generation Aegis-equipped destroyers, called Gwanggaeto the Great Ⅲ, after the first ship began to be constructed last month.

Under the project, South Korea is working to secure a total of three destroyers of the class by 2028 with a budget of 3.9 trillion won. (Yonhap)

Japan and Germany to Hold First '2 Plus 2' Dialogue Talks in April - Yomiuri

TOKYO (Reuters) - The foreign and defence ministers of Japan and Germany are looking to hold a "2 plus 2" dialogue online in mid-April, the daily Yomiuri reported on Monday.
The "2 plus 2" talks will be the first among the two countries, and they are expected to discuss ways to defence and a "free and open Indo-Pacific" in face of an increasingly assertive China, the report said, citing multiple unidentified Sources.

Taiwan’s Defence Ministry on Monday reported a new incursion by China’s air force into the island’s air defence identification zone, made up of eight fighter jets and two other aircraft, one of which flew through the strategic Bashi Channel.

Chinese-claimed Taiwan has complained over the last few months of repeated missions by China’s air force near the island, concentrated in the southwestern part its air defence zone near the Taiwan-controlled Pratas Islands.

Late last month Taiwan reported 20 Chinese aircraft were involved in one such incursion.

In the latest incident, Taiwan’s Defence Ministry said four Chinese J-16 and four J-10 fighters were involved, as well as an early warning plane and anti-submarine aircraft, the latter of which flew to the south of Taiwan through the Bashi Channel that connects the Pacific to the South China Sea.

Taiwan’s air force sent up a combat air patrol and warned the Chinese aircraft away, the ministry added.

German warship to sail through South China Sea, officials say

Yeah, but Berlin took the path of least resistance and decided that the vessel will not pass through the Straight of Taiwan.

Otherwise Merkel would have to call Xi again and kowtow.

Better to do this half assed passage and not expose Chinese sea dominance efforts.

Much like the German state department ornamenting Taiwan with a white flag on their homepage.

It's not so much China which Merkel kowtowed to rather than her own "allies". In this instance, it was Foreign Minister Heiko Maas who got to have it his way. He's a Social Democrat, the junior partners in Merkels coalition.

By way of threatening to leave the coalition (and burying the current administration), they can informally veto anything not unanimously agreed upon. The Social Democrats are vehemently opposed to any notion of Germany acting resolutely on the world stage.

South Korean and U.S. intelligence authorities believe North Korea is ready to roll out a new 3,000-ton submarine, only waiting for the right timing, Yonhap News Agency reported Sunday, citing sources.
It said the intelligence authorities have determined that the 3,000-ton submarine, unveiled in July 2019, can carry three submarine-launched ballistic missiles, or SLBMs.

The assessment comes after a U.S. think tank said the North has moved a submersible missile test barge at its missile test site to a different position, possibly indicating an upcoming SLBM test.

Taiwan unveiled a new amphibious warfare ship on Tuesday (Apr 13) that can be used to land troops and will bolster supply lines to vulnerable islands offshore China and in the South China Sea.

The 10,600-tonne Yu Shan, named after Taiwan's tallest mountain, is the latest part of President Tsai Ing-wen's ambitious programme to modernise the armed forces amid pressure from China, which claims the island as its own.

Built by state-backed CSBC Corporation Taiwan, the ship will enter service next year, and will be armed with a cannon for use against air and surface targets, anti-aircraft missiles and rapid-fire Phalanx close-in anti-aircraft and anti-missile guns.

Formally naming the new ship in the southern port city of Kaohsiung, Tsai said it represented a "milestone" in Taiwan's indigenous warship-building plans.

"I believe that this ship will certainly strengthen (the) navy's ability to fulfil its mission and further solidify our defences," she said.

CSBC Chairman Cheng Wen-lung said as well as being an amphibious warfare vessel, with space for landing craft and helicopters, it will be used for transport to Taiwan's possessions in the disputed South China Sea and offshore Taiwanese islands which lie close to the Chinese coast, long considered easy targets for China in the event of war.

An Indonesian Navy submarine disappears north of Bali and Indonesian Coast, A search and rescue operation has begun for the submarine the KRI Nanggala-402, which has disappeared with 53 people on board, according to the country's authorities. Some reports say contact was lost after the sub was cleared to dive into deeper water. "The Navy is currently looking for it. We know the area, but it is quite deep," First Admiral Julius Widjojono told the AFP news agency. Authorities have asked Australia and Singapore to assist in the search. The ship is one of five submarines operated by Indonesia. It was made in the late 1970s and underwent a two-year remodel in South Korea that was completed in 2012.

Indonesia asked Singapore and Australia for help. According to the commander-in-chief of the Indonesian armed forces, Hadi Chahyanto, the submarine may be located 700 meters deep. In addition to the Nanggala, the Indonesian Navy has another submarine from the same project, the Chakra (number "401"), both commissioned in 1981. Both submarines underwent a medium repair at DSME Corporation's shipyards in South Korea in 2009-2012. Indonesia, April 21, 2021.

Two Australian vessels – the ANZAC class frigate Ballarat and the support ship Sirius – will be deployed to the search area on Friday and Tuesday respectively.
Officials say the submarine was build to dive down to 250 meters and also she will run out of oxygen today :(
