Japan has axed her plans to build land-based ballistic missile defence systems in favour of two new Aegis-equipped destroyers. Apart from tactical considerations, officials have cited concerns that falling interceptor rocket parts could cause collateral damage on the ground. Parts of the previously eyed solution will be recycled, however, to avoid penalty fees. (Source, English)

That's the weirdest objection I've ever heard. What would you rather happened to your property – the off-chance of it getting damaged by debris, or you and your entire neighbourhood going up in a plume of smoke 'cause "rocket man" finally did it and pushed the red button?

Indonesia:
Negotiations between France and Indonesia for the purchase of 48 French Rafale fighter jets are advancing at a fast pace and a deal could be inked soon, French website La Tribune.fr said last week, citing several sources.

Indonesia would like to seal a deal before the end of the year but French negotiators want to take the time necessary to fine-tune the details, it said.

Philippines:
A deal that would bring multi-role fighter jets to the Philippine military, one of its big ticket projects, could be signed before President Rodrigo Duterte steps down in 2022, according to Armed Forces of the Philippines chief Gen. Gilbert Gapay on Monday (Dec. 7).

The defense department has yet to make public its choice between two types of fighter jets—Saab JAS 39 Gripen or Lockheed Martin F-16V–but Gapay dropped hints it could be the US-made F-16s.

“Soon, before our President steps down, we will finally have multi-role fighters in the likes of the F-16 in our Air Force inventory,” said Gapay at a Laging Handa press briefing held online.

The potential acquisition of F-16 fighter jets was among the topics discussed by American and Philippine officials during the visit to Manila of US Secretary of the Air Force Barbara Barrett in November, a security official privy to the meeting told INQUIRER.net.

The new fighter jets would add to the Philippine Air Force’s fleet of 12 South Korean KAI FA-50 light fighter jets, the PAF’s first supersonic aircraft after the retirement of Northrop F-5 Tiger jet fighters in 2005.

The Philippines may acquire another 16 S-70i "Black Hawk" combat utility helicopters for the Philippine Air Force (PAF), Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said on Thursday.

So thats :
16 S70i + Mi17 + this 16 if it pushes through = 48 choppers that could have been an all Bell412 EPI buy.

Man if BELL could only choke a bitch, probably already did Turdeau.

Taiwan:
via Taiwan Times

In an essay published by the U.S. Naval Institute, former Deputy Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Michael Morell and former Admiral James Winnefeld warn that Chinese leader Xi Jinping (習近平) will "bring Taiwan back into China" in mid-January 2021.

With the West distracted by the U.S. election and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the authors believe the "operation" will be completed in just three days.

Morell and Winnefeld paint a worst-case scenario in the article, published by the private, non-profit U.S. Naval Institute. They predict the operation will unfold quickly, "beginning on the evening of 18 January," prior to the U.S. presidential inauguration.

At the same time, China will carry out cyberattacks to cripple the country by disabling the national power grid and other important utilities. This will be followed by a swift sea and air blockade, with several People's Liberation Army (PLA) submarines joining in the action.

The authors imagine the blockade will pave the way for the landing of PLA amphibious forces. Meanwhile, China would send stern warnings not to intervene to the U.S., Japan, South Korea, Australia, and other Taiwanese allies.

On the second day, global stock markets will crash due to the turmoil. World leaders will make statements condemning the attack, but nothing more. Bogged down by multiple issues, Washington will be unable to react.

On the third day after the attack, Morell and Winnefeld believe it will be too late for Washington to reverse the damage. Xi would then whitewash the invasion by telling the world that the "Chinese Dream" has been fulfilled and "welcome the people of Taiwan home."
doubt they willdo it in 2021 , the Chinese will push for more pressure and maybe take closer island to them at a warning then a invasion of Taiwan ( kinmen island pengu island and other island that Taiwan still hold mile of Xiamen city ) then they may offer 50 year 2 state 1 nation crap , but with Taiwan manage to keep they military for 50 year ( heck maybe 99 year deal ) it will still be a big win for the CCP cause who know what happened in next 50 or 99 year right ? + the CCP will manage to stop American armed sell to Taiwan and remove Taiwan from the 1 chain of island defend . btw @Junglejim about drone 30000 ft is cool and crap but most drone sensor are not that good , ( American drone sensor sure ) but majority drone sensor can spot crap from 30000ft , that why you see drone tend to fly lower alt for spoting and targeting ( the turk drone with canadian sensor fly around 3500m to able to used it weapon , it still can spot thing at higher alt but the image quality are not that great)

Stop wondering and just wait for the news, none of us knows where the funds come from. Frankly speaking it is none of our business so stop over analyzing and just wait for the news.

smart move to drop the aegis shore system , the main reason they drop it actually are 1. it a non moving target that will be 1 to be knoch out in a war = wasted money 2. cause it will be priority target no province wanted to host them ( who the F wanted to be living next to a target for nuke or even non nuke missile attack ) , better invest in mobile system that can shot down ballistic missile aka more aegis ship or built some kind of new SAM mobile system that can shot down ballistic missile

Simple, the company the Philippines is dealing with is not under sanctions of CAATSA. Also, with the Philippines going its own way, we might have reached a golden era where we can finally tell the US to sod off. We have been doing that with EU for the past few years.... but nah soon as we change admins watch the Philippine "elite" kiss ass to their white masters again just to feel good and be told by EU and the US "good boys and girls"

Japan will build two naval vessels equipped with Aegis missile interceptors as an alternative to a scrapped plan to deploy a land-based system, Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi said Wednesday.

Japan had been considering two other options for deploying the interceptors offshore to counter the North Korean missile threat -- one envisaged refitting private-sector vessels to mount them and the other using offshore structures similar to oil rigs.

Kishi also said at a Liberal Democratic Party meeting on defense and security issues that Japan plans to develop standoff missiles that can be launched at targets from locations outside the range of enemy missiles.

To that end, he said Japan wants to extend the firing range of surface-to-ship missiles that it has been developing, with the Defense Ministry seeking to secure an additional budget of about 30 billion yen ($288 million) for the next fiscal year starting in April.

LDP lawmakers who attended the meeting endorsed the two plans. The government aims to win Cabinet approval for them later this month after securing formal support from the ruling party and its junior coalition partner Komeito.

South Korean defence and engineering prime Hyundai Rotem announced on 22 December that it has been awarded a ₩533 billion (US$481.4 million) contract by the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) to produce a third batch of K2 Black Panther main battle tanks (MBTs) for the Republic of Korea Army (RoKA).

Hyundai Rotem stated that delivery of the 56-ton MBTs, the number of which is undisclosed, is expected to be completed by 2023. The company delivered the first batch of around 100 tanks to the RoKA in 2015 and expects to complete delivery of a second batch 106 tanks by 2021.

It is understood that the third production batch will also feature an indigenously developed engine believed to be the twin-turbocharged Doosan DV27K V12 engine rated at 1,500 hp and the German-made Renk HSWL 295 automatic transmission system, comparable to those constructed under the second batch.

The South Korean government is expected to order more than 600 K2 MBTs to replace its ageing inventories of M48 Patton tanks and earlier models of the in-service K1 MBT.

However, years-long efforts to develop a locally made transmission system – which would have boosted the company’s efforts to export the MBT – has yet to produce viable results, with the S&T Dynamics EST15K automatic transmission failing to meet reliability and durability under government-mandated standards that call for 320 hours of continued operation without faults.

The company is taking aim at potential opportunities in the Middle East, having earlier unveiled a desert-optimised variant of the K2 MBT, which incorporates features such as a turret shade, dust covers, and an additional air-conditioning unit installed on the turret bustle to provide enhanced cooling.

The K2 MBT is operated by a crew of three and is armed with a 120 mm L/55 smoothbore gun, a co-axial 7.62 mm machine gun, and a roof-mounted 12.7 mm machine gun. The main gun is fed by a bustle-mounted automatic loader, which can hold 16 ready use rounds, with another 24 rounds protectively stored in the main hull.

South Korea:
Long-Range Air-Launched Cruise Missile-II (장거리공대지유도탄-II) is one of the primary land-attack weapons being developed for upcoming KF-X Korean fighter jet.

It is being developed by LIG Nex1 in partnership with Agency for Defense Development using a mix of indigenous and foreign technology.

Republic of Korea Air Force's acquisition of 260 Taurus KEPD 350 cruise missiles for its F-15K Slam Eagle fleet included technology transfer, one of them being the penetrator. Korea System Challenge (KSC) acquired necessary technology for advanced kinetic penetrator from Taurus Systems and is participating in this development.

This new missile for KF-X will be used to avoid enemy air defense and strike hardened targets such as bunkers and missile facilities deep within North Korea.

Taiwan:
The Ministry of National Defense will spend NT$226.65 million (US$8.08 million) on armour from HCG, a manufacturer of bathroom fixtures, for its armoured vehicles, reports said Tuesday (Jan. 12).

HCG, also known as Hocheng, is the only company inside Taiwan qualified to produce the required external armour for the eight-wheeled CM-34 “Clouded Leopard” Taiwan Infantry Fighting Vehicle, UDN reported.

The company should be able to supply its product to the military by Feb. 10, 2022. It has been involved in other military contracts before, mostly in how to develop the use of ceramics for bulletproof materials, according to the report.

Countless live-fire tests were conducted before HCG won approval as the only qualified supplier of the armour. Initially, the military had ordered 284 of the CM-34 vehicles but later added an additional 21.

Israel often doesn’t identify the countries to which it sells defense systems because it doesn’t want to appear to be part of conflicts, Guzansky explained. But “usually in reports when they don’t disclose, it can be an Arab or Muslim country or Singapore, so usual suspects could be Taiwan, Singapore, Philippines, etc.,

According to a report, Vietnam strengthened its outposts in the disputed South China Sea with improved fortifications and infrastructure.

Emplacements for anti-aircraft and coastal protection programs have been constructed on reclaimed land at West Reef and Sin Cowe Island, in accordance with the report by the Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative, or AMTI, which is a part of the Washington-based Heart for Strategic and Worldwide Research.

It reportedly made its assessments based on analysis of satellite imagery in cooperation with Simularity. According to Simularity’s website, its software “automatically analyses geospatial imagery and data to automatically find and classify unusual changes.”

The Philippines will be the first country to receive the Indian-made BrahMos cruise missile, considered the world’s fastest supersonic missile.

The two countries have signed an agreement for a potential supply of the weapon, which would boost the Philippines’ coastal defense, according to reports.

Jointly developed by India and Russia, the BrahMos is a medium-range supersonic (faster than the speed of sound) missile that can be launched from submarines, ships, fighter jets, or land.

The Straits Times has reported that Philippine Defence Undersecretary Raymund Elefante and Indian Ambassador Shambu Kumaran on Tuesday signed an implementing agreement at Camp Aguinaldo, headquarters of the Armed Forces of the Philippines. The Asian country will be procuring defense material and equipment from India.

Philippine Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana was quoted by The Straits Times as saying: “We are buying the BrahMos missiles”. He did not reveal any further details of the procurement.

Training/logistical elements have been underway since 2019 with the intent of raising a new Land-Based Missile System (LBMS) battery, probably modeled after the Indian Army's Missile Regiments that operate Block-2 GLCM:
