on Dec 3 1941, a Swedish recon patrol from the Hangöbataljonen disobeyed the orders and approached the Hanko city and, surpricingly, noticed that the Soviets had abandoned their naval base.
When reaching the city hall they wanted to raise the Finnish flag but hadn’t any. Fortunately, some soldier had a white-blue handkerchief so that was used and a messenger was sent to pick up a one.
So when a Finnish patrol, having used a different route, arrived with a flag they were a bit pissed off. You see, the flag raising was supposed to be done by them.
Hanko Peninsula was heavily fortified, so the Soviets never tried to break the Harparskog Line althoug having more manpower, tanks and artillery.
Pics show the city church and Soviet tank obstacles.
