Also, how peculiar, no Basic training. Standards across units must vary enormously.
Maybe there's no basic training as we know it, but surely a country as bureaucratic as theirs would strive to have all recruits trained according to some sort of universal standard?

Personally, I like the idea of having recruits trained by their future units. It's how we used to do it in our army as well before conscription was abolished.

Firefighting exercise performed after the attack on Pearl Harbor. The four women in the photo are (from left) Elizabeth Moku, Alice Cho, Katherine Lowe, and Hilda van Gieson.

" ‘We were rugged,’ Lowe said. ‘We carried heavy stuff, oil drums, bags, anything that needed to be stored.’

Fires in the storage areas were devastating and common so ‘they trained us for firefighting’.

She remembered putting out one real fire, but she mostly just enjoyed the practise: ‘It was a lot of fun. We'd shoot water at one another.’ "

I wish we had such beautiful uniforms instead of … instead of whatever it is that we have.
I share this sentiment of yours. The Bundeswehr army uniform had been called a "tram conductor's outfit" in the 1960s and unfortunately it hasn't changed much since then. I'm the last one to call for the return of the Pickelhaube or Stahlhelm, but a decent tier 1 uniform is highly in order. A few years ago, there was a small movement to introduce a new parade uniform modelled after the fashion of the Napoleonic Wars and especially Lützow's Free Corps in black, red and gold. It didn't gain track though.
