Roza Egorovna Shanina
Soviet single sniper of a separate platoon of female snipers of the 3rd Belorussian Front, recipient of the Order of Glory; one of the first female snipers to receive this award. She was known for her ability to accurately fire at moving targets with a doublet - two shots following each other. 59 confirmed enemy kills.

Actually she's not Shanina , she's is a Yugoslav Partisan from WW2.

an exception to the rule

Yes, and it is not the only one.
A missing or incapacitated right arm or a right arm that must hold a crutch for handicapped individuals (cadets) are legitimate reasons for the left-hand hand salute.
The left-hand INDIVIDUAL SALUTE while armed is authorized with the left hand for all service guidon bearers and for all Marines, Sailors, and Coasties. Probably there are more and Japanese are even stranger then Americans.

Women of an engineer regiment of the Xinjiang Military Region of the PLA. The Chinese military does not have basic training or boot camp. Recruits are sent directly to their unit where they are trained in their job. These are before and after photos of these female recruits. Allegedly the photos were taken after one month of training. Contrary to popular belief there is NO conscription in the PLA.

Wow, that I did not know. So they are entirely volunteers and professional. Insane.

Also, how peculiar, no Basic training. Standards across units must vary enormously.

I learned this in the early days of sinodefenceforum. Another thing.. China struggles with getting recruits with better education. About 60% of all recruits come from rural areas where education is poorer than city dwellers.
