Frankly, it's kinda sad how we treat our grand-parents and parents. They're just shipped off to be out of the way.
I'm going to speak extremely broadly here, but this is one aspect I've never really liked about "the West" or "white culture" (don't kill me, I say this for lack of a better term). I'm American of Mexican descent and in the Latin American world, it really isn't a "thing" to send the elderly to care homes. Once they can't care for themselves, you bring them into your home or at least make sure they are living close enough to you to be able to check in on them regularly. We bend over backwards to make sure our elderly don't end up in care facilities.

@av405

Perhaps the most staggering facet to me is that many pensioners actually want to be housed in an elderly home, saying they don't want to be a burden on their children. That's how far this drive for perfection has come.

That's a good point as well. It's a shame since multi-generational homes would, in theory, help alleviate a lot of societal issues: Housing shortages, high health care costs (for both families and the government), lack of family interaction/presence, loneliness, etc. More specifically, I'm referring to taking in the elderly once they can't care for themselves, have lost their partner, etc.

It's 24,000 USD per month for my Mom's "in home" care at my sister's house. That gives her attendants for 24 hours per day for light walking assist, toileting, some rehab, light food prep and night watching. Even then, my sister is doing work to schedule rides to clinics, doctors, and a few social activities. Sister's kids have left for college and there is nobody else to help...

F*** me. A full-fledged 24/7 care home costs around 4,000 EUR in these parts. I guess everything is bigger in America after all.

The rest was paid in advance in taxes throughout your life.

At the end of the day you're always paying for it yourself.

^----Yeah, Muck. It is rather stunning. These are competent but not exemplary staff, in general . The in-home care network is professionally “understood “ by a family member, and therefore we know that cost is in line with what the market is charging these days.

Once a year we have Waitangi day. To commemorate signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. Usually it has become political. With the left woke Govt getting flowers and the right getting S**t literally in the face.

This year they seem to have tried to control themselves having to host the latest right iteration coalition and the ACT party pushing for a referendum on the actual treaty of Waitangi definitions.

Maori don’t like the fact that they signed over their sovereignty and while they used to culturally invade and confiscate from their fellow Polynesians they don't think their same law applied when they killed settlers were invaded and confiscated ... long story short.

SO this year Luxton the current PM for NZ turned up and instead of the last six years of lefty inspired woke Maori will have sovereignty, Luxton under the guidance of ACT Seymour hit them with why don't you look after your children whom only 1/3 attend school despite spending millions and several decades on Te Reo Moari language available in school.

Luxton then went on to talk about ACTs idea of breaking up the education system to have contract schools where they could have millions to decide to spend on their own style of education that they think would get the kids at school and relearn stone age culture with the cannibalism and confiscations forgotten about..

The right Govt had just torpedoed the lefts idea of a health system that already cannot cope with waiting lists and their idea was that Maori would have the express lane into surgery speeding passed the waiting non Maori NZers on triage in the hallways. The same left that complain about perceived apartheid systems overseas.

Which people would eventually notice. It wouldn't be as clever as like handing them millions for their Maori schools and if the kids don't turn up they can blame themselves.
Though will bet a diploma in Maori won't be much in an AI society unless the next left makes it a compulsory on the CV for a job.

In 2008 in Houston, in home care for a hospice patient was 50 bucks an hour, now that was separate from hospice, it was personal care after hours. You can go broke pretty fast at that rate

The NFL is going to do the black national anthem for this upcoming sportsball super duper nobody cares anymore bowl.

That's going to maker every other race alienated. The national anthem is neutral, that's the only one I will stand to and salute or take off my hat and pay respect to in this country, unless it's from another country playing here and after our national anthem has played, because that's appropriate.
There is a black national anthem? Wtf? 😲
