This soldier had fought with the Mujihadeen in the past, but joined the Afghan military. Photo taken on the outskirts of Herat, in the southern part of Afghanistan. This photo was taken between the Soviet withdrawal (1989) and the fall of Socialist Afghanistan (1992).

If I had seen later photographs of those vehicles still there, I do not know if some were recovered and taken away as museum pieces, I hope that it has been done and that part of the history has not been lost

It's probably a lost cause but I'd LOVE to know more about the picture with the two Russian ofcrs with the nearly new M-16A1's.........Interesting!!

I have seen half a dozen pics with soviet soldiers holding M16's in Afghanistan. I can't be sure, but they all look like showing off captured weapons, not the way you would be handling your issued weapon. So my best guess is that they M16 are captured weapons. They were widespread by then and it is very well possible that some had found their way into the hands of Afghan Mudjahideen. I also have a few pics of soviets with Thompson SMGs and HK G3 and MP5. Not too mention the ubiquitous Lee Enfields.
