Sanctions won't stop the war, and it's more or less an open secret that they've never been employed to stop a war.

The Russians don't function like we do. Just think of the Covid-19 restrictions – how relatively mild inconveniences caused a major uproar in Western societies. But it's no skin off Putin's nose if his people can't pay their rents anymore or have to resort to self-subsistence to bring food on the table. Any unrest that may emerge will be met with batons and one-way tickets to Siberia.

What sanctions will be able to do, however, is stymieing Russia's re-emergence. The ambivalent side-effect being that Russia is increasingly becoming reliant on China. Russia is on the cusp of becoming a large North Korea in Beijing's pocket.

I think I may disagree. As long as oil stays at $70-$100 per barrel, Putin can sneak enough out on his junky, uninsured ships to pay for the war and keep the oligarchs in caviar. But if Trump re-opens the Keystone pipeline and ANWR, (he is /has), and oil goes to say, $50 per barrel, sanctions may only be a secondary concern to Putin. Biden's ( well, actually the 26 year old woke communists running his administration) war on US energy made Putin very rich and essentially financed his war.

You both are right. Its a delicate dance between all this and Russia must be hurt the most while we try to shield our economies from too much fallout.

Russia is done for the next decades due to sanctions. But it's still enough to terrorise Ukraine.

Taking away Russian $ and € revenues hurts the war effort directly. Russia lacks the economic environment to thrive with its rubble ruble.

So it needs hard cash for valuable goods. Nothing is free not even Kim's help.

They try very actively to import sanctioned goods and machinery into Russia.

Upholding and increasing the pressure nudges Russia down a bit again.

The situation is pretty dire right now. Ukraine has really hit a lowpoint in human ressources. The territory taken in Kursk region has shrunk by two thirds, and the Russians are north of Kupiansk...a strategic railway hub that the Russians probably want back before opening any territorial discussions.

Many young Ukrainians here in Slovakia. I cannot judge them as I don´t know what I would do...but if Russia crumbles economically, better now than later.

President Blinkin last days removal of Putins ship insurers via sanctions has literally nuetered the little C*** at sea.
Earlier they didn't want Ukraine hitting the oil refineries, due to election and inflation but they did on their own plus previous sanctions has halved Russian monthly production. India and China supply has been halted via ports.
Little C*** cannot survive this pressure for long.

Its interesting that the insurance idea may have stemmed from tankers sinking then Finland boarding and impounding the ship for safety. Giving plausible reason to apply the sanction.

The Russian army has begun using the Inokhodets UAV, a strike version of the Orion UAV, to protect the Crimean coast. In the video, the Inokhodets UAV attacks an X-UAV, a Ukrainian sea drone, with a missile. The video was filmed on February 1, the model of the Ukrainian sea drone is unknown. Presumably, the MAGURA V5 sea drone from Spetstekhnoexport was used. Technical information about the Orion UAV and the Ukrainian sea drone is in the links to the video in the comments to the video.

He's found out that russia is prepared to fight Ukraine to the last Nork and that associating with russia makes your regime violently unstable (Syria, Hamas, Hezbollah, Iran).

Last thing he wants is finding out how capable Nork gas stations are at holding his massive ass.
