The Russian channel was on a rampage today. According to reliable Russian news, 6 F16s were shot down in Odessa alone. They'll announce it by New Year's Eve.
When they lose, they always beat the Ukrainians by at least a room.
All that happened is that today the Ukrainians shot down a Su34 with Mariupol, which is a very interesting header. Either there are too many Patriots, or they are very mobile, or they are very well placed, but the Russians could not find out, or it is really the F-16s that are doing the job, and what is more, it is F-16s with AIM 120D AMRAAMs. I don't know which. However, they also have an unconfirmed legi victory over the Black Sea west of Crimea, a Su 30. If both legi victories are true, they would have needed two Patriots.
So the Ukrainians are at their lowest level, and they don't want to be.
Somewhere I read that they didn't need AWACS for that, but they moved a separate (less valuable) radar close to the front line, keeping the Patriot radar turned off. The smaller radar indicated the approach of the 3 planes from about 50km (about where the glide bombs would have been launched from), from there they had the initial target data, turned it off and turned on the Patriot radar further from the front and launched. Supposedly they had already shot down a Su-24 using this method, that was the dress rehearsal. An important addendum is that in order for the glide bombs to get that far, the Su-34 launches from quite a high altitude, about 12km, so it's not that hard to spot/no OTH problem. Since the planes had been bombing the bridgehead area for a long time, they knew about where to take the radar. The 3 planes carried about 18 glide bombs, so they not only shot down the planes, but prevented a heavy bombardment.
