Exiled Russian author Boris Shumyatsky tells a German talk show audience to stop chasing illusions about the "Russian soul": Russia's culture, he says, is "one of violence" that knows "only victims or perpetrators". As a Russian, Shumyatsky says, you become a perpetrator so you do not end up as a victim. Citing the example of Russia's recent decriminalisation of domestic violence in spite of there being a domestic murder every 40 minutes, Shumyatsky suggests that Russian culture encourages "the dominion of the strong over the weak". He thinks the Ukrainians should not sue for peace, as they'd be perceived as "weaklings" for it and invite even more violence against their nation. (Source, German)

Hannibal, Mongols, Zulus. Basically every commander worth a damn.
Doesn't help that the regular Russian army is supposed to be guarding your flanks and you've been kicking them in the nuts for 6 months straight so their motivation to help you will be ... sub-optimal
