"They put me on a grave in the cemetery and started shooting at me. My execution was imitated." Oksana Minenko is the widow of Oleksiy Hvostyik, lieutenant of the Ukrainian National Guard. The man died on February 24 while defending the Antonyevsky bridge from Russian invaders in Kherson. After Oleksiy's death, the woman was horribly tortured by the Russians, who considered it an "honor" to torture a Ukrainian soldier's wife.

Won't make any difference as long as the entire rotten political system remains the same as it has been for decades. There'll just be a different figurehead representing it

[…]

She didn't start the pacifist peace dividend idiocy, she as the others before her was merely a disposable asset to keep blame away from the real culprits, all German political parties.
1. Show me one Western European country that didn't buy into the "peace dividend" – including your own. Even the British, who probably pursue the most hawkish politics with respect to Russia, recently had to admit that what Russia uses up in a single day exceeds their ordnance stocks entire.

2. You don't seem to know a whole lot about the German political landscape. This is the first time a tripartite government has ruled this country – and two out of three parties in this coalition strongly advocate a more proactive stance towards Russia. In fact, the Greens and Liberals have been lobbying for Leopards to be sent to Ukraine since May 2022, so it's not "all political parties".

The issue at hand is a different one: The Social Democrats are so afraid of being out-competed by their coalition partners in the upcoming elections that they view their Ukraine policies only through the lense of not allowing their coalition "partners" any successes or the satisfaction of having been right on this. In that sense, this is not even a German issue, but plays into a wider trend: the West is severely lacking politicians who think beyond four-year-terms; I couldn't name more than a handful in the entirety of NATO. That's what a Twitter democracy will get you.

Besides, much like in your country or in most other European countries, the ministry of defence is a post shunned by the average politician since armament projects have a way of running into cost overruns and expensive delays. I just looked at it: only a handful of the incumbents in Europe have lasted a full term. The post is an ejection seat and most who sit on it want to play it safe. However, the flipside is that a person who wants the job can do a lot of good, as indeed Lambrecht's predecessor had done. If you think the incumbent doesn't represent an issue of her own, you've not been paying attention.

Case in point, Lambrecht's apparent successor-to-be – the ombudsperson of the armed forces, who's proven an insightful critic of the state of affairs – has just given an interview demanding that Germany spend another €300 billion on defence.

How will that be working out, though? When the latest Challenger update was announced, its necessity was partially explained by the British government with the fact that their rare rifled guns (which do not seem to be produced anymore) are basically worn-out. Have the replacements already begun?

Indeed! The Challenger 2 is probably the least useful tank to be sending Ukraine, except perhaps as a short term cover for other better supported vehicles (i.e. Leopard 2/Abrams).

Well, it's a powerful gesture still. And especially useful if it's capable of stirring Berlin into action as well (which seems to be the case).
Medvedev has been coming up with a lot of crazy ass sh!t lately.
It's funny to think many Western observers believed him to be a moderate version of Putin's due to his uneventful presidency. He's either showing his true face here, or he feels that the likes of Prigoshin and Shoigu have marginalised him in their scramble for becoming Putin's heir. And since the Security Council has become sidelined as of late, maybe Medvedev feels acting the radical is his only hope of outshining the others.

I'm kind of wondering if it could be useful for Ukraine and the West to just pick a horse in that race of theirs. The Russians have a clear and evident inferiority complex; being seen as an equal of America has ever been a top priority of the Putinists.* Wouldn't it give one of Putin's heir-apparents a boost if the demand was made that he should be put in charge of the Russian delegation for talks between both sides (and thus be seen as an accepted dialogue partner)?

*If you asked me to point at a moment when the West did contribute to this mess, it would be Obama's comment that Russia is a "middle power" that worries him not. Putin's hatred for America and the West entire glowed red-hot afterwards.

Oleksiy Makeyev, Ukraine's ambassador to Germany, recently called on the German government to send Leopard 2 tanks, because without them they will not be able to retake their territories. Although the German leadership has not yet decided on this, Armin Papperger, the head of the tank manufacturer Rheinmetall, said in an interview with Bild on Sunday that even if the government were to approve it, it would still take a year before they could deliver Leopards.

it seems more and more that in order for Germany to work, the Allies have to invade again.
