The hit on that first vehicle is definitely direct fire or a mine. The explosion is smaller than the artillery rounds that land first. A dip in the landscape is a logical place to put mines (so you know where not to drive yourself) or as a known distance range marker for RPGs. Probably that entire ditch running parallel to the road is mined.
