First view of Royal Navy warship equipped with the Naval Strike Missile.

HMS Somerset inbound to Devonport this morning following a visit to Haakonsvern naval base in 🇳🇴Norway where the missile canisters were mounted for the first time.

Over a year since it was announced and mechanical problems with HMS Somerset have delayed the work to fit the missile but at last, the interim replacement for the obsolete Harpoon block 1C in RN service is here.

Officially called the Maritime Offensive Strike System (MOSS) by the RN, this highly stealthy missile also has land attack capabilities.

Second unit of the two ship Ning Hai class of coast defense ships. Differed from her sister ship in having a lower output powerplant ( and thus lower speed), no aircraft facilities, and a different AA armament. This class are often described as cruisers, but were notably smaller and slower than true cruisers and had coal-fired powerplants. Ping Hai sunk in shallow water by Japanese aircraft and later raised and incorporated into the Japanese Navy, first as a barracks hulk and eventually as an escort vessel under the name Yasoshima. Used for general escort duties she was finally sunk by US carrier aircraft west of Luzon on 25 November 1944.
