Germany:
Aircraft from USS Block Island (CVE-21) press home an attack with rockets on the Type VIIC U-Boat U-758 on January 11th, 1944
Such brazen assaults show how dangerous it was for the Kriegsmarine to wager U-Boats in the open ocean this late in the war, though U-758 would survive and return to St. Nazaire nine days later. She would later be damaged beyond repair while in port at Kiel by US and British bombers in March of 1945. USS Block Island herself would actually be sunk by U-549 on May 29th, 1944 while carrying out a search and destroy mission in the Eastern Atlantic, though the submarine was herself sunk by Block Island's screen of destroyer escorts; USS Eugene E. Elmore and USS Ahrens.
