Terror Explosion rocks central Beirut

There were at least two major explosions.

But if I understand correctly, although the explosion happened next to the silos, it' s actually a derivative of ammonia that blew up in enormous quantities. No?

So far that's the official version.

I seem to remember a massive flour dust explosion occured in the States not too long ago.

Texas I think it was.

A ammonium nitrate explosion would leave a crater.

That is what happened in Toulouse in 2001.

The official version stipulates that storage in Beirut was six times the amount of what was stored in Toulouse.

I can' t see any ammunition stored there. It; s the Christian quarter, it's not in a remote area of the harbor, and as Berkut said it does' nt look like an ammunition explosion.

Those silos almost look like they jump a little bit (shudder/flex/shake) at the initial point of the shockwave, in one of the videos. I'm sure they protected the stuff on the westward side, reducing the effect of the blast.

My 2p of internet-based video observation.

A fireworks dump, ammonium nitrate storage and huge grain silos right next to each other. Sounds like the third world mix of incompetency, lazyness, corruption and stupidity.

The concrete of the silos will have diverted some of the blast towards the water, but being filled with grain negates that advantage to a large extent by adding so much more explosive (shockwave mainly) power also depending on the sequence in which the explosions happened. Pity it wasn't filled with sand ...

Fireworks storage if done properly is compartmentalised unlike grain and in this case it seems to have been the same for the AN. Sequential explosions vs one massive blast. There was a fireworks storage in the Netherlands that went up in 2000 where safety procedures had not been followed properly leaving doors open so explisions could daisy chain leading to a huge blast that destroyed an entire neighbourhood.

Add to that a substance used in explosives and highly combustible grain dust ...

I've heard but it can be just a rumour that someone was welding something in the hangar containing the chemicals to prevent theft. Flames and chemicals are a losing combination.

That is exactly what I thought when I first saw - at the time I did not know what the building was but could see it had reduced the blast area - to be honest it was lucky that something that substantial and high was there - quite shocking

Interesting. But I wonder what radioactive particles they are talking about, I'd imagine there would be a very exact signature.
I don't mean to be flippant, but I would hope they didn't keep the nuke next to the grain silo, next to the 3000 tonne fertiliser bomb, next to the fireworks factory. I think we are looking at incompetence in governance of the shipyard or, conspiracy theory somoene wanted to keep a stash of nitrate immobilised for other reasons.

Tragic anyway.

At this point that would be way beyond the mere principle of incompetence.

I thought the same. Perhaps the grain elevator saved some lives.
