Nui Dat, South Vietnam. 1968-08-30. Sapper Trevor Campbell of Beenleigh, Qld, works on one of the rock crushing machine in the quarry at Nui Dat. The quarry, worked by members of the 1st Field Squadron, Royal Australian Engineers (RAE), yields more than 23,000 cubic yards of blue metal each month for use around the 1st Australian Task Force (1ATF) Base.

The Minister for the Army, Mr Andrew Peacock (left), talks with Vietnamese officers at the Jungle Warfare Training Centre at Nui Dat, Headquarters of the 1st Australian Task Force (1ATF). Mr Peacock, on a six day tour of South Vietnam, visited the school and talked with the Vietnamese and Australian instructors. His workload has increased since the announcement of the withdrawal of the Australian Force in Vietnam. Servicemen have packaged up their Asian purchases so that they can send them home.

Lance Corporal Paul and Sapper Keith, both of Beverley Hills, NSW, were called up for National Service in April last year and so far have managed to stick together, although on operations they usually travel with different Task Force units.

Nui Dat, South Vietnam. May 1971. Sergeant Wilf Lock of Melbourne, Vic, takes careful aim during a clay pigeon shoot at the Nui Dat Gun Club. The club, which incorporates the highest levels of safety, was formed in March 1970 and now has a membership of about sixty.

The club has about sixty members and during a typical afternoon shoot, as many as 800 shells are fired at clay pigeons.

Nui Dat, South Vietnam. 1967-12. Task Force fortifications require the use of thousands of sand bags. A daily work force of Vietnamese villagers turn up at the sandpit, a few miles from Nui Dat, to fill and tie the sandbags for one piastre payment a day. The average worker can fill about 130 bags a day, which earns them more than a rice field labourer. The sandbags are then trucked to units and laid by Australian troops.

Members of D Company, 5 Battalion, the Royal Australian Regiment (5RAR) work on setting up the headquarters of 1 Australian Task Force (1ATF) at Nui Dat. 1ATF, comprising two Australian infantry battalions, was formed in May 1966. Nui Dat was to remain the major base for Australian forces in Vietnam until 1971. Identified is WO2 Don McGregor, Company Sergeant Major (CSM) (centre, in shorts, back to camera); all others unidentified.
