A collection of NATO ships anchored in the Firth of Clyde, Scotland. The ships assembled to participate in Exercise Mainbrace in September of 1952.

HMS Vanguard dominates the photograph with the United States Navy heavy cruiser USS Quincy (CA-71) behind her. In the background, three United States destroyers are visible.

Exercise Mainbrace was the first naval exercise conducted by NATO on a large scale. Over 200 ships and 80,000 men from no less than nine navies (United States, United Kingdom, Canada, France, Belgium, Norway, Denmark, Portugal, and the Netherlands all took part) were involved in the exercise. The exercise was designed to help simulate defending against a Soviet attack on Northern Europe, protecting key coastal assets, and landing forces ashore.

HMS Blake as a helicopter cruiser Laid down in 1941-42, the three cruisers of the Tiger class were originally to have been sister ships to Superb, an improved variant of the Swiftsure class cruisers (also known as the Minotaur class), a modified version of the Crown Colony class cruisers, but their construction was slowed down. Finally, the ships were launched in 1944-45 and they were left incomplete until their future had been decided. It was not until 1951 that a plan was agreed under which the three ships would be completed as advanced gun-cruisers due in large part to the perceived threat of the new powerful Soviet Sverdlov class 210-meter cruisers. Their completion took significant amount of time and they joined the fleet between 1959 and 1961.

Slightly reminds me of the old black n white movie "On The Beach" in the end the final mission to go home to America to die. Some great old actors all gone now. I remember watching the movie at a Saturday Matinee we kids lived for, pretty sure it was the North Main Theater in Houston which is now a dinner theater. They cut the street level down a foot and a half, it just looks foreign to me today. There was a little small Pop Corn stand next to the building that was owned by midgets which of course the theater owner surely allowed them to do and it was there as long as I can remember until the theater finally closed due to no kids any longer.
