Dong Tam, South Vietnam. November 1971. Warrant Officer Class 1 Ned Larsson of Canberra, ACT, leads some of his students through the wire perimeter from Dong Tam, one of two centres in the Mekong Delta, where Australian Army Training Team Vietnam (AATTV) members are training Popular Force soldiers in night operation techniques. The soldiers spend two weeks under instruction from the six man team at the centre before returning to their own province to pass on what they have learnt.

Gunner Ernie Widders of Armidale, NSW, an indigenous soldier, takes time out during a break in operations in Phuoc Tuy Province, to write a letter. Gunner Widders, who was a shearer before being called up for National Service, is a member of C Company, 2RAR /NZ (ANZAC) (The ANZAC Battalion comprising 2nd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment and a component from the 1st Battalion, Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment). The battalion has just completed its final operation in the war zone and will return to Australia later this month.

South Vietnam. Battle of Kham Duc. Quang Tin Province. May 1968. Soldiers of the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam (AATTV) with US Army Special Forces in the command bunker at the old French fort at Ngok Tavak. Identified, left to right: Sergeant First Class (SFC) Harold H. Swicegood; Captain John White AATTV; Sergeant (Sgt E-5) Kenneth J Benway, medic, 11th Company Da Nang Mike Force; Warrant Officer Class 2 (WO2) Frank Lucas AATTV; Sgt David A. Blomgren; Sgt Miller and WO2 Donald George (Don) Cameron AATTV. Capt White joined the AATTV in February 1968. He was soon commanding a 120-strong company of Americans, Chinese mercenaries, and Montagnards near the Laotian border. On 10 May White's company was attacked by a large North Vietnamese force at Ngok Tavak. Hand-to-hand combat took place and two Australian warrant officers, Don Cameron and Frank Lucas, led a counter-attack that prevented the fort from being overrun. WO2 Cameron was commander of one of three platoons which came under heavy attack between 8 to 10 May 1968 from Viet Cong (VC) near Ngok Tavak. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) on 1 January 1970 for his actions in Vietnam whilst serving as a WO Class 1 with the AATTV. WO2 Cameron served in Vietnam from 20 October 1965 to 19 October 1966 and also completed a second tour from 18 February 1968 to 20 November 1968. Cameron originally enlisted in WWII as a Private on 19 December 1944 and was discharged in 1947. He next served as a Lance Corporal with 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR) in Korea where he was awarded the Military Medal (MM) on 1 January 1952. He was awarded a second MM on 6 March 1969 in Vietnam with the AATTV.

A sharp eye is needed when moving through jungle such as this in South Vietnam. Sitting astride an Armoured Recovery Vehicle (ARV), his M60 machine gun close by, is Private (Pte) Frank Jelen of Fairfield, NSW, a member of the 3rd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR). The ARV is followed by a Centurion tank. Australian soldiers of 3RAR and 4RAR combined with C Squadron, 1st Armoured Regiment, in Operation Overlord on the border of Phuoc Tuy and Long Khanh Provinces, to the north of the 1st Australian Task Force Base (1ATF) at Nui Dat. Identified atop the Centurion tank are 37691 WO2 Russell Hocking, 3RAR, to the left of the gunner, and 519516 Pte Ian M. Tibbits, 3RAR, to the right. Also believed to be atop the tank are Pte David Pye and Pte David Read.

hoalwater Bay, Qld. September 1969. Gunner Ken Howard, 18, of Albury, NSW, has assumed an important role with D Company, 8th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (8RAR). Currently on exercise with 8RAR in Queensland's rugged Shoalwater Bay training area, Gunner Howard moves with the Company at all times as the Forward Observer for his own unit, 102 Field Battery, Royal Australian Artillery (RAA). He observes and reports any instances where his own unit could lend support to the infantrymen. 8RAR is exercising in the area near Rockhampton in preparation for its first tour of South Vietnam, due to begin before the end of the year.
