Bien Hoa Province, South Vietnam. 1968-05. Major Geoff F. Cohen and Corporal D. F. Butler, both members of 3rd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR), dress the wounds of a North Vietnamese soldier captured after the battle at Fire Support Base (FSB) Balmoral, twenty five miles north of Saigon. It was the second attack on the base since it was established.

Iroquois helicopter machine gunners from No 9 Squadron, check their weapons after a mission in support of Australian troops in the rubber plantations near the 1st Australian Task Force (1ATF) Headquarters, near Vung Tau, South Vietnam, known as Operation Bribie. During a reconnaissance run over the Long Tan area, the RAAF men spotted three Viet Cong (VC) moving through the rubber trees. They swept into the attack and the three VC guerrillas were believed killed. Draped in machine gun 7.62mm ammunition belts, the crewmen are A18504 Leading Aircraftman (LAC) Brian Víncent Taylor, of Rockhampton, Qld (left), and A56669 LAC Brian Boyd (Ron) Hill, of Subiaco, WA (right). These men along with O37576 Flight Lieutenant Robert Andrew Macintosh, and co-pilot O37553 Geoffrey Alfred Banfield, flew the Bell UH-1B Iroquois A2-1019 during Operation Bribie. This aircraft is now part of the Australian War Memorial's collection.

Torchlight search by 37834 Sapper (Spr) Raymond Bellinger, of Melbourne, Victoria as he crawls along a Viet Cong tunnel during Operation Enoggera. Spr Bellinger was one of a team of engineers who searched hundreds of yards of Viet Cong tunnels after the 6th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (6RAR), had occupied the village.

Glencoe, Pennsylvania
, who fell in 1967. He was 20 years old. Today is his birthday. He is remembered by his cousin, Darla:


"I was only 2 when Jimmy died in Vietnam. He was born my cousin but lived with our family for several years while in high school. All my life my Mom kept his picture on our wall and the letters he wrote home tied up in a bow in her dresser drawer. Our family honors him, we love him, and we are better people because he was one of us. We know we'll see him again some day. He was a great young man and we're proud to have had him in our family."

Vung Tau, South Vietnam. May 1967. Sapper Bruce Pattinson of Wynnum, Qld, takes a sight using the 40mm Bofors gun on board the Army's Medium Landing Ship, Vernon Sturdee, while tied up at Vung Tau. Vernon Sturdee is being used to ferry supplies to Baria and Saigon. It makes at least two trips a week. So far the ship has not been fired on, but its gunners are waiting and ready for Viet Cong action.

Vietnam Election Day Leaflets being distributed by US Army door-gunner Private Walter Gorzynski from a No 9 Squadron, RAAF, helicopter. A wave of dysentery among the ranks of RAAF door gunners caused No 9 Iroquois Squadron, based at Vung Tau, to accept the services of US Army helicopter door gunners who had volunteered for any missions in the Iroquois. Members of the 765th Security Platoon checked in daily to see if their services could be used within the Squadron.

Lieutenant (Lt) Mick Murphy of Townsville, Qld, calls `clear' as he checks the weapon of one of his tracker platoon members who had just returned to base at Nui Dat after his final patrol. Soon afterwards Lt Murphy and other soldiers of Support Company, 4RAR /NZ (ANZAC) (The ANZAC Battalion comprising 4th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment and a component from the 1st Battalion, Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment), were extracted from Nui Dat, Headquarters of the 1st Australian Task Force (1ATF) for the last five and a half years. The Battalion is now based at Vung Tau which has become the main base for the marshalling of units for embarkation and the closing down of unit stores ready for shipment to Australia.
