Pte O'Halloran is a signaller with C Company, 2RAR /NZ (ANZAC) (The ANZAC Battalion comprising 2nd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment and a component from the 1st Battalion, Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment). The battalion has just completed its final operation in South Vietnam. It will return to Australia later this month.

The day before this photograph was taken, the gun was used to save the life of Pte Burrows and another soldier when they detected and killed a Viet Cong walking down a track. Pte Burrows was taking part in an operation with 2RAR /NZ (ANZAC) (The ANZAC Battalion comprising 2nd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment and a component from the 1st Battalion, Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment). Portrait of 42252 Corporal Bernard "Bernie" Lyle Smith, 5th Battalion The Royal Australian Regiment (5RAR). Taken during a patrol of the Long Hai hills, this is one of a series taken of the Reconnaissance Platoon by Canadian newspaper correspondent Mr Daryl Henry during Operation Renmark. Corporal Smith was promoted to Sergeant and returned to Vietnam with 5RAR on its second tour. He was accidentally killed during a patrol on 9 March 1969 and is buried at Wallaroo Cemetery, South Australia.

Bien Hoa Province, South Vietnam. 1968-05. Private Richard Barron of Maylands, WA, watches from his gun pit at Fire Support Base (FSB) Coral. Private Barron is a member of the Task Force Defence and Employment Platoon and was engaged in Operation Toan Thang, along with other elements of the 1st Australian Task Force (1ATF). FSB Coral was heavily attacked on 1968-05-13 and 1968-05-16, but the enemy was driven back each time. Note his M60 and belts of ammunition.

Second Lieutenant David Sabben was a 21-year-old National Serviceman when he found himself in the middle of the battle of Long Tan, one of Australia’s fiercest and most intense engagements of the Vietnam War.
It was his first battle, and one he will never forget.
“Nothing could prepare you for it,” Sabben said. “I’d been in the army a year and a month, and to come into what was essentially a pitched conventional battle – no amount of training could prepare you for how to cope with it.
“It was the first contact – the first time that we had exchanged fire with the enemy – and there’s no baptism like a real baptism.”
