Schnellboots. Conceived at a hit & run defense against the Commonwealth navy, the first was constructed in 1917. Powered by 3 gasoline Maybach engines, it was speedy... so much so, it could overtake a fired torpedo.

The concept was considered sound, so development continued during the interwar years.
Shown here is the S-1, made in 1930.

In the late 30s, 13 Schnellboots were made for other countries - those sold to Bulgaria had diesel engines. This photo was taken early in WW2.

German gyrocopter used by Kreigsmarine subs... to a limited extent. Records show only 19 IX-D2 subs were equipped with the FA330 gyrocopter and then only in the Indian Ocean. Sub captains felt they helped give their location away - which in the Atlantic was true.

Difficult to see, but one of the gyrocopters is being assembled on deck here.
