This image from "the Blitz" is not from London, or Coventry or Swansea...but actually from just across the water in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
Belfast was an important centre for shipbuilding and arms production...thus it was on the Luftwaffe's target list.
The city was bombed four times betwen April - May, 1941 causing the loss of many lives and extensive damage to property.
Here, rescue workers sift through the rubble of Eglington Street off the Shankill Road, Belfast on 7th May 1941.
Some help was sent from the neutral Irish Republic, south of the border, and also rescue teams were sent across from the British "mainland".

It was dangerous work...but someone had to do it.
Sikhs of the 4th Indian Infantry Division ( Red Eagle Division) move forward, five abreast, using their bayonets as mine probes.
This was the standard technique used when there were no magnetic mine-detectors available.

This photo, taken on May 19, 1944, in England, shows Queen Elizabeth (The Queen Mother) talking to a British paratrooper of the 22nd Independent Parachute Company, 6th Airborne Division. 18 days after this picture was taken, this young man jumped over Normandy, landed behind enemy lines, and gave everything he had....for everything we have.
