Pentagon Gives Turkey a Deadline to Cancel S-400 Deal or Lose F-35
By July 31, says the ASecDef, Ankara must choose between the Russian S-400 or the U.S.-led JSF.
The Pentagon has started the process of removing Turkey from the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program, and has drawn up plans to shift the NATO ally’s manufacturing roles to American and allied manufacturers, U.S. defense officials said Friday.
Washington has given Ankara a deadline: by July 31, Turkey must cancel its order of Russian S-400 missile interceptors — or lose its right to buy 100 F-35s and make parts for even more of the high-tech jets, Pentagon acquisition chief Ellen Lord told reporters on Friday.
The Turkish and Azerbaijani armed forces launched a joint military exercise in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.
Azerbaijan Ministry of Defense statement, "Sarsılmaz Brotherhood 2019" in the exercise called 5 thousand soldiers, about 200 tanks and armored vehicles, approximately 180 missiles and cannon, 21 aircraft and helicopters and other weapons were reported.
The exercise was aimed at improving the coordination of the two armies and the ability to conduct joint operations through the sharing of experience of the armed forces.
The drill will take place on representative enemy targets until June 11th.
Why, by the way? Purely for political reasons, right? I mean, by all accounts the S400 is a fine weapon system; from a logistical and financial point of view though, you wouldn't want to buy a platform that's not compatible with all the other tech you use, perhaps to the point of not even being able to communicate with it, and that'll produce eye-watering costs due to a lack of synergetic effects.
Thanks for clearing this up for me. I also editted it from my original post too. The stories of the Great War-era Imperial German Navy that I heard in my early education must have kicked in to my memory when I was writing it down
