Great thread DENO! I'm particularly interested in the Turkish Police's PÖH, especially with regards to them being called to served on the Syrian front, specifically in Afrin. As far as I know, usually it is the Gendarmerie's who are called to served overseas in peacekeeping and security behind the front lines. Is there a particular clause in Turkish law stating that a civil police unit can be called to serve in an offensive role in a war overseas?

Well, firstly tank you for your post . The Police Special Operation Forces (PÖH) is a a little bit different than its international counterparts since their main proffession is being a para-military unit which specialized on large scale urban warfare, not only for low-intensive raid or cqb operations. Also there are some spesific teams inside of PÖH which only specialized for close protection, public security or hostage resuce et all. Thats whay they deployed to Afrin with the gendarmerie to be used in urban warfare phase of the operation. And also similar to that they have also deployed to Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia and Libya in previous years...

And also serving in peacekeeping of NATO operations is not just special for Gendarmerie. As a branch of Turkish Armed Forces they are regularly deployed to international missions. But mostly for Kosovo they are much more preferable for the Armed Force since they also can be served as a military police and they know law-enforcement tecniques

FBI HRT (Hostage Rescue Team) is a unit that specialized on counter-terror missions such as public safety and hostage rescue operations who were trained to operate pretty much in any enviroment of US. Also for the French RAID same as well. For the Turkish LE, Gendarmerie Public Security Command (JÖAK) could be the exact equivelant of HRT and RAID and also for French GIGN. PÖH is a tough case that you can not compare to any units around the world. But maybe they could be equivelant of German Army Feldjäger, the troops who trained for intensive urban warfare, MP and riot control..

It is very unique indeed. In case of the PÖH they got military grade weapons such as 50 cal. Barrett M82 / AX-50 anti-material rifles, M2 heavy machine guns, M72 LAW rockets and 60 mm mortars. Apart from the infantry weapons PÖH is using high numbers of 4x4 APC/MRAPS such as Nurol Ejder Yalçın, Otokar Cobra / Cobra II and BMC Kirpi even in urban operations. Eventough accourding to Turkish news they ordered 6 units of T-129A attack helicopters from TAI. However It's a general strategy to improve current equipment and capabilities of internal law-enforcement agencies such as Turkish Police and Gendarmerie to deal with any kind of inter-border security issues/terrorism and to focus precious recources of the armed forces just for cross-border operations and border security missions. Thats why they have drastically increased the active personnal number of PÖH. I have been told that currently Turkish Police has aprx 20,000 officers who are serving as PÖH....

So if delivered, the T-129As would be used internally? This is the first time I'm hearing that a law enforcement entity has ordered and would soon be operating attack helicopters. The Turkish security structure is indeed unique and interesting.

He said "going from Police SOF" so I presume he meant moving on from the POH to some other law enforcement unis.
