The mad major
B Coy 2 Para in line trotting around Troodos Mountains, Cyprus 1961, pitch black no moon, no stars, stumbling, cursing etc.
Our Major was a small lethal hard case who had a standing invitation to any soldier in B Coy who didn't like the way he did things to step around the back of the Coy Office and sort things out ! NOBODY ever bothered.
Our platoon was hunkered down ( who knows why?) and I was told to get up front and ask the OC what was going on ( another thing he encouraged - a real soldier ) Blundering forward in the blackness I kept asking where's the mad major until _ you guessed it - a venomous voice hissed in front of me "I am the mad major "
Fade to black and some mumbling ....er, ah etc.
Fortunately he took it well and didn't kill me on the spot. !
