This photograph, taken on April 25, 1945, near Torgau, Germany, shows three American soldiers (69th Infantry Division) and two Soviet soldiers (58th Rifle Guard Division) relaxing along the Elbe River and examining each other's weapons. That day, two Americans named Cpl James J. McDonnell and Second Lieutenant William Robertson were among the first Americans to make contact with the Red Army. James later recalled, "I couldn't speak Russian and I couldn't speak English, but hugs and handshakes said it all." Looking back that day, William said, "It was a great feeling of relief, the war was over."
