Submarine aircraft carrier I-401, captured after WWII

The Sentoku class carried three M6A floatplane bombers each, unlike prior aircraft carrying submarines that were designed to use their aircraft for reconnaissance missions. Along with the Type A Mod 2 class (two bombers), these submarines were designed for attack missions with aircraft, and I-401 was on just such a mission to attack Ulithi when the war ended. Her M6A Seirans, painted in American markings, were catapulted off the boat while folded before hoisting the black surrender flag as ordered.

They remain the largest conventional submarines ever built.

USN:
Feb, 1917. "A blaze on board the battleship Wyoming (BB-32) at sea.

It didn't take long for the perfectly trained crew of the Wyoming to extinguish this blaze aboard the great battleship. Each man rushed to an arranged station. Water compartments were closed. Preparations was made to flood the magazine if necessary and every possible contingency was guarded against. A fire has but little chance aboard American naval craft because of the perfect system maintained."

Only five ships (DD-231 to DD-235) were armed with 5-inch guns. The inboard destroyer will be either Hatfield (231), Brooks (232), Gilmer (233), Fox (234) or Kane (235).

The outboard is USS Williamson (244)

Graph (formerly U-570) was a Type VIIC U-boat that was captured while on her first patrol, the vessel was studied by the Allies and later recommissioned by the British.

The submarine carried out several war patrols under the White Ensign before being pulled from service in 1944 due to maintenance issues, later acting as a target ship until she ran aground.
