The first Frégate de Défense et d'Intervention (Defense and Intervention Frigate) officially begun construction today at the Lorient shipyard of Naval Group during a visit of the French Minister of the Armed Forces and has been named the Amiral Ronarc'h. The ships will be named after admirals of the 20th century with the lead ship being named after Admiral Pierre Alexis Ronarc'h, Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor, a distinguished admiral of the French Navy who served during the Campaign of China (Boxer Rebellion) and the 1st Word War.

Aircraft from the carriers of Taffy 1, 2, and 3, including FM-2 Wildcats, F6F Hellcats and TBM Avengers, strafed, bombed, torpedoed, rocketed, depth-charged, fired at least one .38 caliber handgun and made numerous "dry" runs at the Japanese force when the American planes ultimately ran out of ammunition.

From the after action report by Lt. W.S. Burton:

'That gun in less than an hour expended something in excess of 300 rounds...After all power had been lost, and before the word to abandon ship was passed, the crew of No. 2 gun loaded, rammed and fired six charges entirely by hand and with a certain knowledge of the hazards involved due to the failure of the gas-ejection system caused by the air supply having been entirely lost. While attempting to fire the seventh round, the powder charge cooked off before the breech closed, wrecking the gun and killing or wounding all but three crew members, who were critically injured and two of whom were blown clear of the mount and the ship.

The first man to enter the mount after the explosion found the gun captain, Carr, on the deck of the mount holding in his hands the last projectile available to his gun, even though he was severely wounded from his neck down to his thighs. He was completely torn open and his intestines were splattered throughout the inside of the mount. Nevertheless, he held in his hand the 54 pound projectile, held it up above his head and begged the petty officer to help him get that last round out. You must appreciate that the breech of the gun had been blown into an unrecognizable mass of steel. The mount itself was torn to pieces. He was the only man capable of physical movement within the mount and his only idea was get out that last round, his last chance to do damage to the Japanese.'

Carr died a few minutes after he was dragged from the gun mount.
