As well in the Austrian "Bundesheer", as in the German "Bundeswehr", the "Heeresbergführer" are the Military Mountain Leaders. Since 2015 both armies have a common, 37 week long, training course for their Mountain Leaders, it is alternately held in both countries and each year quite a few courses are held in other NATO countries. The course is also attended by members of other NATO and non-NATO armies. Royal Marines Commandos, SAS, SBS and Parachute Regiment from the UK. Swedish Army members, Belgians from the SFG, Dutch from the Korps Mariniert and the KCT.......
In Germany the training course is based in the "Ausbildungsstützpunkt Gebirgs- und Winterkampf" in Mittenwald and in Austria it is in he "Gebirgskampfzentrum" in Saalfelden.
If I had to point out the best Mountaintroops, I would probably choose the "Heeresbergführer" from Austria and Germany. Their missions are quite diverse, mainly it is advising of commanding officers on all levels, dispensing mountain training to soldiers of their own armies and allied armies, planning and leading of military operations in an high altitude mountain environment, leading military members on off-duty mountain tours, selection and training of new "Heeresbergführer".
