This is Polish (not Romanian) Podhale Rifles Brigade.

The last photo was taken during the parade of the 2nd Podhale Rifles Regiment in Sanok in 1936.
I pay attention to the swastika - a sign present in the symbolism of mountain units since the 1920s - in the highland tradition it was a "good luck cross", a wish for safety in the mountains.
Unfortunately, the meaning of this sign has been distorted in Hitler's Germany.

I must have had a "senior citizen" moment......I meant to write Polish, not Romanian.....
You are right about the swastika, prior to it's usurpation by the NAZIs it was a commonly used symbol for good luck, not only used by mountaineers , but also by Scouts and many religious movements.

Don't worry mate, I sometimes make mistakes too. Like every human being.
Fantastic thread, I love mountain units! Thank You!

Podhale are indeed Polish, and great to see Indian and Pakistanis on Siachen glacier, thats one of the harshest environment to live and fight

Here is a videoclip with Romanian Mountain Hunters (Vanatori de Munte), including few images from WW 1 and WW 2 and Afghanistan

As it was said above, the Romanian Army had the custom to adopt the kids of fallen soldiers and raised them in their barracks. The kids will live there and follow civilian primary schools. Later own they were allowed to either follow a civilian carrier or a military school and become enlisted military personel, whatever they wished. Even today the relaties (as wives) of fallen soldiers in Afghanistan for examples, if they wish so are automatically hired within Minister of Defence (even in their husbands former units if they chose so), following the principle that nobody is left behind and even if you'll die your folks will be taken care of
