3rd May, 2020. Based on the intelligence input that terrorists were taking the civilian inmates of a house in Changimulla, Handwara of Kupwara district hostage, a joint operation was launched by Army and JK Police. A team comprising five Army and JK Police personnel entered the target area occupied by the terrorists to evacuate the civilians. The team of Army and JK Police entered the area and successfully extricated the civilians

However, during the process, the team was subjected to heavy volume of fire by the terrorists. In the ensuing fire fight, two terrorists were eliminated and the team of five army and JK personnel, comprising two Army officers, two Army soldiers and one JK Police Sub Inspector, were killed.

Two militants were killed as a result of the operation. Lashkar-e-Taiba commander 'Haider' was killed during the operation on Sunday. The identity of the second militant is being ascertained.

**11 of the Hostages are all safe but a few are under Investigation for being sympathisers. They used the women and children as human shields so that’s why the CO went in. Local sympathisers pretended to amongst the hostages to bait the Rescue Team and asked to speak to Hostage Negotiators which the Col. joined and they were ambushed as soon as they entered the house.**

Sub-inspector of Jammu-Kashmir police Shakeel Qazi


Colonel Ashutosh Sharma, 22 RR (19 Battalion, Brigade of the Guards) was among the 5 soldiers KIA in yesterday's Encounter in Kashmir's Handwara in which 2 terrorists including a LET commander was killed.

Last photo of operators after being Heli dropped in the mountains through a HAL ALH DHRUV. You can see the trail of route made by terrorists in front besides of the chopper which later they followed. Contact established at 4 am in the morning where visibility was not good & drones couldn't help.

Unfortunately on gunfight spot where snow slide/mini avalanche on corn ice happened & first 3 operators including their commander fell and rolled 150 feet in gorge where terrorists were sitting. All engaged in a close quarter battle despite having fractured bones. All 5 terrorists were eliminated in the engagement where 3 operators KIA on the spot and others 2 succumbed to their injuries in field hospital.
It was a routine operation for them but shear bad luck due to slide their position was exposed.
