Anyway, what is extraordinary about this, Stockholm syndrome.
She wants to thank someone for her child surviving intact.
Otherwise we don't know if they were kept separately or with the others, and what fate befell the not so precious hostages who were not mothers, young girls, children.

Fun fact two: if you know the Schindler's List, you know that even in the ghettos and concentration camps there were some guards who were humane (or at least seemed to be humane compared to the others..)
