Canadian Rangers of the Pelly Crossing Patrol recently completed a Type 2 patrol (Un-mentored) from 3 to 8 December. Part of this patrol included creating austere landing strips. Though the plane was only notional, #DYK austere landing strip construction is one of the many skills Canadian Ranger Patrols practice. Sometimes you never know when you’ll need an airstrip.

To plan, support and conduct operations and exercises in the largest #CAF area of responsibility in Canada, #JTFN has its Headquarters in Yellowknife, NT, and detachments in Iqaluit, Nunavut and Whitehorse, Yukon. Known as Detachment Nunavut and Detachment Yukon respectively, they are responsible for liaising with federal and territorial governments and departments in their respective territories, and providing operational awareness to Commander #JTFN. In addition to this, they also provide support to 1 CRPG as required, and engage with local communities.

Common to many #OpNANOOK activities is, capability building through Arctic training, developing partnerships, and improving the readiness of all participants. A key facility which enables the #CAF to conduct #ArcticOps and training in the High Arctic is the Canadian Armed Forces Arctic Training Centre (CAFATC), based in Resolute Bay, Nunavut. In addition to training and ops, the facility also provides a support base for emergency operations and disaster response in support of government agencies and civilian authorities.

In April 2020, members of 440 (Transport) Squadron delivered Personal Protective Equipment to Canadian Rangers in northern communities during Op LASER. No matter the season, or outfitted with wheels or skis, the CC-138 Twin Otter allows 440 Transport Squadron to carry out a wide range of tasks in the North.

In order to operate in such an expansive area, #JTFN coordinates #CAF activities in the North with support from local units. Being the northernmost full-time Royal Canadian Air Force unit, 440 (Transport) Squadron’s tasks include airlift, utility and liaison flights in support of #ArcticOps and CAF activities, including support to the Canadian Rangers.

#DYK that since 1942, Canada and the U.S. have worked together in the Arctic for their mutual defence? Although security dynamics have changed since then, #JTFN continuously looks for opportunities to engage with our U.S. partners in northern activities to further strengthen our relationship in our area of responsibility.

From 13-24 Sep 20, a CP-140m Aurora with full tactical crew and a section of ground support technicians, played a vital role in Operation LIMPID roto 4. Op LIMPID is the CAF mission is to enhance CAF all domain awareness. The #CAF keeps a routine watch providing domestic Surveillance over Canada’s air, maritime, land, space and cyber domains. It also keeps a physical presence throughout the North.

Increased surveillance and monitoring of the broader Arctic region, requires close collaboration with select Arctic partners. Joint Arctic Command (JACO) in Denmark is one of those partners. The #CAF actively participates in training and maritime security operations with JACO, contributing to the surveillance and control of the Arctic. These opportunities allow us to fortify close partnerships with our Allies, and ensures the #CAF has the ability to effectively respond in the North when called upon by the Government of Canada.

As there is strength in numbers, #JTFN continually looks for opportunities to cooperate with Allies and partners in Arctic training and exercises, as well as in other areas of mutual interest, which will help Canada achieve its vision of being strong at home, secure in North America, and engaged in the world. During #OpNANOOK-#NUNALUVIT 20, international divers from Finland, France and Belgium joined #CAF divers in order to exercise their ability to rapidly deploy to an austere environment and conduct ice-diving & salvage operations.

Now this is a mission and operational area which has always fascinated me....so harsh and austere a place and such an tough interesting mission that is fully functional to support it with interesting equipment!

Though it's much like the UK's Falklands Islands support which is much less austere than it was in decades past this north pole support looks much tougher but yet no big deal!

Each year during #OpNANOOK we also conduct experiments? DRDC and Joint Arctic Experiment (JAE) participate in this annual Op by testing new equipment, systems and technologies to support #ArcticOps. For example, during #OpNANOOK-#NUNALUVIT 19, DRDC conducted a study on divers about temperature variation in cold climates and in 2020, JAE worked with Natural Resources Canada to optimize the tent systems currently used for soldiers who are deployed in cold weather operations. The collected data is used to better understand both human and medical factors in Arctic conditions.
