As part of Operation NEVUS, DND civilian technicians deployed last month to Ellesmere Island, Nunavut, to conduct maintenance on the High Arctic Data Communications System. This system links CFS Alert to federal government communications centres in Ottawa. Operation NEVUS ensures that this communications link remains operational.

Responding to crisis or emergencies in the Arctic requires a coordinated team approach. Every year, #JTFN works with federal agencies, civil authorities and Allied militaries to improve our collective ability to respond to safety and security matters in the North, and establish a common emergency operating picture.
Last year, #OpNANOOK-#TATIGIIT focused on engaging the Yukon Government, federal agencies, U.S. military and civilian authorities in the conduct of a whole of government, multi-national response to a natural disaster scenario, based on a community evacuation from a wildfire.
Canada’s military has operated in the North for more than one hundred years. Due to its increasingly strategic importance, the #CAF often works hand-in-hand with fellow Arctic nations and Allies to strengthen our knowledge of this vital region.
Ex VIGILANT SHIELD, a NORAD-led ex focuses on the defence and security of North America. In 2016, this Exercise took place in the High Arctic, demonstrating the #CAF’s ability to detect, identify, and meet possible threats in some of the most remote regions in the world.
