Royal Marines Mountain Leaders are putting helicopter pilots and aircrew through their paces on demanding training in the Arctic wilderness.
Before taking to the skies over the Arctic Circle, the aviators of the UK’s Joint Helicopter Command must complete the cold weather warfare course, which gives them vital insight into surviving and fighting in one of the planet’s most inhospitable environments, where the sun barely rises and temperatures can plummet to around -30C.

Pockets and pouches open left, right and Chelsea, kit everywhere - oh how I used to love teaching on that gig.

That said, they proabably whinged about my lot getting their nice clean helos dirty and to be fair to them they always came - time and grid to the dot - when we called, whatever the weather.

Before sharpening their warfighting skills in the snow and ice, new generations of marines must be ready to survive in the Arctic wilds, where snow storms and the unforgiving terrain can easily take sap mental and physical powers without the proper training.

Possibly, I know that other units in the RM have been named after WW2 battle honours like the old Commachio Company but don't know anything more than that and Google isn't showing a whole lot either.

I'm not familiar with the term "Cassino Trooper" - anyone have any ideas?

Yesterday, 6th February, the US DoD released a set of images of the British Army’s Cassino Troop deployed on Operation CABRIT in Poland.

~

The photographs, taken on a dark and snowy mid-January day at Bemowo Piskie Training Area in north-east Poland, show personnel from Cassino Troop and their vehicles during a Platform Weapons Operator Course live fire training exercise. Cassino Troop, which takes its name from the battle of Monte Cassino in World War Two, is a hybrid squadron of British Army Regulars and Reservists from 1st The Queen’s Dragoon Guards and The Royal Yeomanry, currently serving as a reconnaissance element of the US-led NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battle Group Poland (eFP BG POL).
