The pipes are rather quiet atm regarding that "fire".

Most likely something started burning (duh) but very unlikely a plane crashed. There would have been considerably much more noise if it had been the case.

Back in the 90´s the Russian 201 Motorized Riflemen Division took part in the Tadjik Civil War (one of the sides was supported by Russia, the other had ties with Afghan Mujahideen), and now you have over there the 201 Military Base, that I suppose it´s mainly or solely staffed by kontrakniki, unless the situation goes completely awry I don´t think that Russian conscripts would visit the "charming" Tadjik-Afghan border

Yes, indeed, the conscripts are now mainly engaged in economic work. And I hope that such S**t will not happen that my peers will be thrown there. I like the history of wars more than the wars themselves.

The fire started during the gun fight. The taliban have set up security at the outer perimeter that was set up yesterday. The crowds seem to be dispersing. Best way to get your people is to leave the airport & go get them by bus or air transport from a pre arranged rally point. If your families come to the North gate you better have a signal, password or wave a specific color rag. Yep, we're in the stone age.

Anyway good luck to China if they think they can control the Taliban. Besides bribing corrupt regimes they have zero experience in this global game.

All their seized belongings are only kept in line by an eternal opression, surveillance and population transfer scheme.

So apparently the firefight at the airport was triggered by an “unknown sniper” which resulted in friendly fire exchange.

this is how civil unrest always transforms into civil war, and then the government is always blamed for opening fire first. I guess “unknown sniper” is a phenomenon fairly widely spread and affects not only revolutionary movements

And that´s how dominoes start falling, because if Taliban decided to take measures against Northern Alliance 2.0 supporters they would go against Tadjikistan, but that kind of actions would trigger a Russian response.....

As long as China won't start engaging in social experiments and teaching gender studies to Afghan students, the outcome of its efforts could be a tad less catastrophic than that of the "free non-regime/non-corrupt nations" efforts.

If Russia enters this conflict, it will solve the problem with the help of nuclear weapons. But the UN, I'm afraid, will be against it.

I wonder who spent more money - the USSR or the USA? And what is the effect? Red Afghanistan was even able to outlast the USSR.

In its practice, however, the USSR had many problems. This was often caused by the different worldviews of the Soviet and Afghan people. It was a common fact for the USSR to study in the same school for boys and girls, but for Afghanistan it came as a shock. As the old Russian proverb says - "We wanted better, but it turned out as always." China has many resources, many people. If they are smarter than the USSR and the United States, they will be able to win the favor of Afghan society, and gradually subjugate the entire country. This will be a matter of more than one year, but with systematic work, a stunning result can be obtained.
