It seems USSR and USA were engaged in nation-building where there is no nation.
I don't think it's possible for anyone to fly to a random territory, round up the people there, and tell them "you guys are now a country, mic drop"

Imo if China wants to have some control over the Taliban and all the other mountain goats wearing AKs over there, it has to coerce them through money, play some kind of tribal game of thrones, to keep everyone at their bay and satisfied enough to avoid causing too much noise or trouble for China's silk-road plans. Find some way to maintain that territory as a desert that is at war with itself, but minimize the amount of bullets flying.
Because at this point I find it difficult to imagine anyone succeeding at anything over there aside from damage control.
 
I’m hoping the planning for the final 48 hours starts with 2 sqn of A10, flying circuits, with ac130.

but I’m worried it starts with, we hope the taliban….

SJWs from my country staged a protest outside the Afghan Embassy in solidarity with Afghan women who are fighting against imperialism and oppression. The Afghan women themselves, however, do not know that they are doing this.

In the first few days they were incapable of flying out more than a few hundred people a day. How were they supposed to fly in at least an entire airborne division? (presuming this would be the 82nd as has happened with it's Ready Brigade at KBL)

I don't know what the plan would have been, but it probably would have been several battalions or a brigade over a few days.
