Recovering Herat as a Dry Port and MSR with Iran is critical to current Afghan government survival.

Afghanistan summed up the results of yesterday's attack by unknown militants on the house of the Minister of Defense. Eight people died at the hands of terrorists, more than twenty were injured. Government forces evacuated hundreds of the neighborhood's residents. During the clash, which lasted more than five hours, all four attackers were eliminated. The Minister of Defense was not injured, his life is not in danger now. Who is behind the attack is unknown - not a single group has claimed responsibility. Nevertheless, the Afghan authorities and the Taliban militants blame each other for the incident.

At this point what can 150 SF really do? The current afghan government who really wants to save its people would be in serious back door negotiations with neighbors where they can send people for asylum.

There’s still India, which wants to deny Pakistan its insane Hitler like idea of Afghanistan as an Eagles Nest redoubt, while trying to avoid Pakistani proxies from nuking the Indian Embassy in Kabul again

There’s still Iran, which wants to avoid a repeat of its embassy being overrun and staff slaughtered compelling movement of an entire multi-division battle group threat of invasion not long prior to 9/11.

There’s still the Kablamistans to the north who might be wise to lift entire Afghan SOF units and their families akin to South Africa did with members of Rhodesians SAS, Selous Scouts, and RLI, at least temporarily.

The real wild card is how China exerts influence in Afghanistan.

Will it do so directly? Or will it want to outsource it, or be convinced to outsource it, to Pakistan?

I wouldn’t outsource picking up dog sh!t to Pakistan.

US money(dollar matched by the Saudis) funnelled thru Pakistani ISI favoured proxies in 1980-89, got us malignant cancer like the Haqqani network.

A Machiavellian approach might be for western intelligence services to exfil some key players and their families, and leave stay behind assets for any future contingency operations such as destabilising and undermining Chinese and Pakistani efforts.

Ugly as hell, especially after 40+ years of forever war.

But do we want a global One Belt, One Road that leads to China?

China avoided the fate of Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact colour Revolutions…..just barely.

Perhaps they will avoid the roach motel of empires.

If this was a betting site I would have place $500 on China working with the Talibs and building their infra: (China has no qualms protecting and and ensuring the safety of hated organization... North Korea for example)
- Access to the minerals of afghanistan
- big win for their belt and road program
- ensuring that the Ughuyrs are pacified
- Can use the radical ones in the Taliban to attack or harass India.

Whatever the West could provide the current regime, China can do the same for Taliban... and this is why the Talibs would be open to them. Unless by some master stroke of US foreign policy they snatch the Talibs away from China

The Taliban assassinated the head of the media and information department of the Afghan government, Dawahan Minapal, in Kabul.

Militants shot at his car on one of the city streets. A spokesman for the movement said that the murder of Minapal was "punishment for his actions." The deceased repeatedly spoke negatively about the Taliban and supported official Kabul in every possible way. Another attack in the capital was carried out just a few days after the terrorist attack, the target of which was the Minister of Defense of Afghanistan. For some reason, the Taliban have begun to feel more confident in Kabul, since they dare to commit such daring acts of terrorism so often.
